I've never really understood the point of that, unless maybe they are using the footwell as a loading wall.

I think it would be a crapshoot as far as predicting how they behave that way, unless you have a really flat floor.

 

It depends on the drivers used. My Bostons sound terrible off-axis, so every degree I could get closer to on-axis helped. Some may not benefit as much.
