Yeah 12ga would be mental to try to put an end on. Considering most commerical cables are 22ga or thinner I think that 18 or 16ga wire is plenty heavy duty for a home made cable
Many commercial cables I have split open only have one twist per inch or LESS also. That's really sh*tty.
I don't bother with the flex sheathing.

I usually use belden 8760 wire, 16 guage, twisted pair, shielded, but it's only one pair, I have some kicking around somewhere that's 6 pair, I keep meaning ot make a set of Front LR, rear LR and sub LR cables.

^why waste your time/effort making them out of anything else... ?
Cat 5 is the same as using T/P with the added benifit that its four cables in one which reduces loop area compaired to using seperate t/p or RCA cables... (better even if you don't have balance/compairative inputs to make use of the twisting)
I read that bit on installer.com probably 2years ago.. as I recall there was some controversy because of the way eddie terminated the cables and because he used capacitivly induced noise, which is not typical of noise problems in a car, and to which shielded cable has a significant advantage of attenuation....
Can't you get cable similar to cat-5 that has more runs of wire also ??
Anyway.. Id only bother making em if I had noise problems that I knew were caused by my existing cables... if it aint broke don't fix it...
