so resently i purchased a dmm.i wanted to check how much resistance my grounds actually had. it gave me a reading of .40 or .040 cant remember which .is this good or bad

my alpine 9827 is supposed to have 4 volt preouts so i thought i would check it. i turned off the speakers and cranked up the volume to the max and it gave me a reading of 7 volts is this right. i know with the volume that high i would be a clipped signal.but is it supposed to read over 4 volts? i never listen to it with the volume over 12 out of 35 anyway

.40 is too high or not right. .040 sounds ok.

I'm not familiar with preout "laws" sort of speak

What kind of signal was it a tone or music?

Here's where I get confused, is that 7 volts RMS or no? .707 * 7 volts is 4.9 Or do decks generally put out that much voltage?

X

the resistance was .040 should i still be looking for a better ground?

the singnal was a 50hz tone and the meter read a solid 7 volts.

Is the .040 ohms is the resistance of your dmm leads?

IF so you get the same reading when you touch your leads together, and this is as low as a reading as you will get.

when i put the leads togther i get a reading of .002 so i just subtracted that from the reading after i mesured the resistance of the ground (.042-.002=.040)

There's a sticky in the sounddomain board that deals with grounds and resistance..."System Noise? Read this..." under the Electrical Explanations header (posted by DigitalBoomer). Hope this helps.
