Hello, pretty soon I will be getting my first car, the glorious 87' Pontiac 6000!

Anyway, I would like to keep the cost down, so I am looking for a relativly cheap cd deck and then I would like to install it myself. Is it really that hard to do? I already bought a stereo kit from walmart that fits this car. Im just wondering about wiring. Are the wires generally the same color? Would you guys be able to help me out if I post lots and lots of pics? Thanks.

We should be able to help.
To make things really simple for yourself, buy a wiring harness for your car. This harness plugs into the factory harness so all you have to do is match the proper wires. The harness will have each wire labelled and the CD Deck will have each wire labelled. It makes for a really easy install. You should be able to buy one of these for about $15 - or it might be included in your walmart kit.

Have fun!

Where would be a good place to start looking for a wiring harness? My first stop will be back at walmart but if that fails where esle would they sell stuff like that? Also, is the wiring in cd players all relativly similar now? Or do they have certain harnesses for certain decks? Or do you just have to find one that works with your car?

Ok, I found a connector at walmart. It is a bunch of fancy coloured wires with a big black box on the other end. So once I get the stock radio out, there should be plugs that will go into this black box? Then the wires will go to the deck? Will the wires inside the car match up with the ones in this harness?

Got my deck today, a jvc ks-sx9350. Spent a couple hours tonight trying to get it installed and am doing quite well. I had to take out the stock radio out of the pontiac 6000. Install the stereo kit. Then wiring... the wiring harness made it soooo easy. I just twisted the wires together to see if it would work, and does it ever! Even sounds great on the 17 yr old stock speakers, believe it or not. Once I get some more time I will solder the wires.

The car was given to me by my grandparents and I cant quite afford insurance yet so I am in no hurry to get it installed because it would just sit there anyway, but I will probably have it good to go this weekend.

It's a good thing to see you got your priorities straight; car audio before insurance.

Well, I finished up the install today and it works like a charm! Before I installed it into the dash I hooked it up and played it to see if everything worked fine. The left side of the deck got quite hot. Is that normal?
