Mercedes - no one can answer.

I own 2001 Mercedes CLK430 conv. that was bought in Canada and taken to the States. It is therefore somewhat different than cars I buy in the states. It has the std. Mercedes radio/cassette that is NOT the Bose model.
I'd like to remove the radio and install a Cd/MP3 player but people say that you can't put an aftermarket cd player in a Mercedes because (1) there are fiber optic cables used to connect the radio to the speakers , and (2) the original radio is connected to the alarm and the electric will be screwed up if it is disconnected from the orig. radio?
Can any of you Canadian guys tell me if this is true? Have you removed the radio from your Mercedes? Very Frustrated.

If you have a factory cd player then i would just keep it and use a Line output converter if you want to add aftermarket amps. If you don't have a cd player than might be able to just mount the old radio in the trunk or somewhere out of sight to keep your alarm and/or airbag function. I am sure that IF there is a fiber optic cable running from your radio to your speaker there MUST be a converter of some sort converting the digital to analog to go to the speakers. Just ditch that and wire there speaks up normally. Now i no nothing about mercedes and i have NEVER installed anything in them i am just going from what i know about other cars. So if this will work someone should let me know because i am sure it will.

I don't think the signal from the deck is fiber optic unless it is going to an amp. I can't see it though.
The alarm may possibly be through the deck though, many newer cars have this.
I would check out the Matt Bogardt forumn at www.carsound.com the people on there such as JBondoX do many more of these types of luxury cars and would probably be better informed on this subject.

The radio is fine to remove. You should only have a din sized opening with a pocket under neath if it doesnt have the 8 speaker bose system. If not you will half to buy the pocket from Mercedes.
Keep in mind your stering wheel controls if you have them. Not sure if was included if you didn't buy the bose option.
There is no fiberoptics in that vehicle that relate to the stereo. The only fiber optics in the 430 are for the *Smart Key* if equiped.
You will be fine changing the deck
