Multiple Batteries

How do i hook up multiple batteries?/ Do I need a isolator? or can I just run them together??
+ to + & - to -
or
+ to - & + to -

Just asking as I have seen all 3 done b4.

if your running 12 volt batteries, your gonna go with +to+ and -to-
if your running 4 volt batteries, you can run them +to- to creat a 16 volt system

this is a good question because i've been thinking of adding one myself, but i thought you needed an isolator to do that. and does the two 12 volt batteries wired like that create a 24 volt system or would you need to daisy chain them like with the 4 volts

8v battery's in series to make a 16v system......24v is illegal and no amp will run on 24v,

Now that explains why I have seen all 3 versions done b4..never checked the battery voltages on here setups....but why do people use isolators then if you can wire them + to + & - to - ?

Will an isolator save 1 battery for reserve then? whereas if your running both 12v batteries + to + & - to- you are basically running both batteries at once?

Will any of these kill your alternator?

an alternator is like an electric motor, if you run it too long so it overheats you can break it. if your battery's are charged properly then your alternator shouldnt be working too hard all the time. An isolator is a good way to save your starting battery from being drained while pounding the stereo with the engine off
