Optima Battery Smell?
I usually notice the smell 15-30 minutes into a drive. The smell seems to go away after the car is off for an hour or so. I believe I tested the voltage right after the install, with the car running parked. I don't have the greatest multimeter but I am pretty sure it was 13.5 volts or so. The car is a 99 grand prix, 3.8L. I had zero issues with smells or gasses prior to the yellowtop install other than the lights dimming quite abit. The extra battery fixed the dimming and the stereo seemed to run noticably better but the smell or gasses the battery is emitting worries me.
Thanks for the responses.

Yes as soon as I open the trunk the smell is definately more potent. After I let it air out abit it seemed that the smell was coming from the seams of the battery/yellowtop cap. If I run the fan the smell mainly stays in the trunk but if I open the windows it seems circulate the air between trunk and cabin more. This is really starting to bother me.
Figured it out! Happened to touch the solenoid mounted next to the battery only to find it was extremely hot. Upon further inspection the solenoid proved to be faulty and the result of the smell. Being so close to the battery I couldn't tell it was producing the smell. I just automatically assumed the solenoid was working properly, it was brand new. Thankyou for all your reponses, my mistake.
i have actually heard that as well. i have no idea if it is true or not though.
isn't it just the idea that if you kill your stereo batt, when the car is off the two will level out? potentially not leaving enough power for your starting battery?
like i said, i have heard it, but i don't know if there is any truth to it. i have to batts never had any issues whatsoever

What i'm thinking is that if your running your stereo with the car off it would come down to if you are running it off the "stereo" battery or both batteries... are the wired together are do you have a switch? so if your running both batteries there going to stay the same right? it would still be the same risk as if you were running a system off the single stock battery...how long will it last till it's dead, it would be something you have to watch.
You can remove that solenoid. Unless you want one battery disconnected while you're parked for starting reserve. Otherwise you don't need it, they will not drain each other.
