setting amp gains...

ok, ok, i know i sound like a genius when it comes to car audio, but, this may shock you...i'm not, and heres a topic i've been thinking about and hope that i can get some more insight on. when setting your amp's gain/level/input sensitivity, what is the best way to do it?

i would believe the o-scope is the best way to go, but i keep reading about DMM's. the first time i set my amp i used my ear and the distortion technique, but personally i probably won't be able to identify a given sound as clipping unless its obvious. nevertheless i then used a DMM and found i was just about bang on (thank you dj training). however, i've heard that even using a DMM is bad and the only real way to set it is with an o scope.

then when going through the different tutorials on manufacturer sites they all say to use a DMM. what i can't wrap my head around is why they all say to set all settings on the deck to be flat ie loudness off, eq's all at 0. now knowing that there are a great deal of audio pros on this site i feel here is the best place to ask a few questions.

1) does the dmm method work? even if not an exact tool, at least as a guide?
2) does it make more sense to set the settings on your deck where you would like them to be and then tune the amp ie loudness on, hi-mid-low settings, SLA, bass boosts?
3) is it good to first match the input sensitivity to the output from the deck ie deck out of 2 volts means 2 volts on the input sensitivity dial, and then make fine adjustments from there?

oh, and i read on the ssa forum that the tone you should use when tuning should be about the center frequency of the bass boost (45-50hz), but what about if your amp isn't marked in hz. i've got a gp-2500d and the bass boost (bass eq) is marked in db

i'm still like half noob when it comes to some of these things (have no idea what impedance rise is or how the hell it works) so i'm trying to learn as much as possible, and the reason i'm asking these questions is because i'm a bit puzzled as to how to set this new amp. i figured set bass eq to 0 and set the level somewhere around halfway. then i've got to figure out how to get a 1 ohm load to this amp, but thats another thread
