subs only loud when headunit is cranked
subs only loud when headunit is cranked
hey guys, just a quick question, im looking into buying a set of 12inch type r's powered by an mrp 1000 used for a year, hes a complete noob and doesnt know anything, i havnt seen the subs yet but hes saying that they are only loud when he has his headunit cranked, so either the subs are blown, hes got the bass turned down on his headunit or the gain is turned down too low or hes got the lowpass turned down so low that only the very low tones are playing and only noticeable at high volumes, without actually meeting up with the guy to tune his system for him, do you guys think the subs could actually be blown?
It could be anything, your best bet is to go and check to see if there are any physical problems with the subs: push on the cone to check for resistance or scraping noises, inspect for burnt areas or broken tinsel leads...stuff like that. You could also use a multimeter to check the voice coil resistance and see if that is out of whack.
There are too many issues with his installation to say. It could be subs were wired in series, the box wasn't built / tuned well, the amp may have problems or the headunit/amp crossovers could be set wrong. The list goes on and on.
You have to consider the fact that a NOOB is using and probably installed or tuned the equipment. What are the odds of something being damaged?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I've got a pretty decent system right now ne ways I just wanted to switch to all alpine, but I told the guy to go back to the shop he bought it from and get them to tune it to find out cuz I don't have the time right now, if he gets it diagnosed then I'll take a look but I don't wanna waste my time and have it end up being broken and be out the $300 thanks for your help!
There's no details! What is the vehicle? Is it a factory headunit? Is it a factory amplified system? Like mentioned there is too many variables. But also like mentioned, metering the coils will pretty much tell you what kind of shape the woofers are in. I think it's a noob install, myself
Haha I just love the word noob, I think it's just bad tuning or bad signal from the head unit, but it's two year old type r's and an mrp 1000 in a nice slot ported box all for 300 bux, which is basically like 1/4 of what the setup cost only a year ago so either he's desperate for cash or the stuff is actually broken, either way I decided not to buy I'm just going to save up for a couple months and buy all brand new, thanks for all of your help guys
