True nothing in life is free but it also doesn't kill to lend a hand here or there for free, not everyone goes the Dutch route these days.
True that

Oh, of course. I mean I do stuff for my parents and my sister.

But being told to "smarten up" because I wouldn't do free work for a complete stranger just annoys me.

Ya know what????

SCREW IT!!

I will spend the money on gas out of my own pocket to go to drive the 6 hours
round trip to go up to Edmonton to spend the maybe 15 mins to to install the drivers for her.

This is ridiculous!!

I post asking for someone to give a few minutes of their time all I get in reply, with
the exception of Mini-Steve,is crap about "I went to school blah blah blah".."I do nothing
for free blah blah blah"...

Ya know something people....I've been to school too for mechanics....Every so often I stop on the
side of the road when I see someone stranded and I offer my assistance and knowledge...
Never once have I ever asked for ANYTHING in return!

I never asked anyone to do something for free!I did say she would likely do what she could to show
her appreciation...It just may not be in $$$$$....

There's no major upgrades....theres no system rebuilds.....

All that needs to be done is to get the drivers loaded.....

And yes typically it would be something that could be done over the phone, except that her and her
roomy know the barebone basics of how to use the thing, never mind loading up drivers.

Hey Mini-Steve,please do get back to me about this....If you can't help out,I will make arrangements to drive
up there.

I can't beleive people anymore.....

He never TOLD anyone to do anything for free, he asked if someone COULD help...

As for older computers.. I just bought a $10 system at a garage sale and reformatted my GF's mothers' computer (a Pentium 100MMX) - added a new hard drive.. 32 megs of RAM, took the "better" sound card from the garage sale computer and upgraded. Things can still be done with older systems that don't need to be "upgraded". She uses this computer for Mah-Jongg, Internet banking and surfing Bonanza fan sites.

You don't ALWAYS need a top of the line system and sometimes $10 is all you need to spend. She is ecstatic about it.. it took me about half a day to do it and I would have done the same thing for a friend if necessary.

In fact, just last week I offered to help my buddy (who owns a computer shop) with the building of a few systems as he was slightly overloaded. I have no formal training and all I "know" is self taught, but I enjoy helping people so maybe it's the boy scout in me shining through. Just my 2 cents.

The problem isn't that he asked, the problem is that he said I need to "smarten up" because I wouldn't do something like that for free.

I also love the fact that he thinks it would only take 15 minutes out of someones day.

Right, making the phone call and arrangements THEN driving over there and finding the place THEN installing it and making sure it all works THEN driving back home. I don't know how fast you drive/work but that's at least an hour or two.

Again, I'm not saying there's no way I'd help anyone in that situation. I'm just pissed at the fact that I'm told off because I may say no.

See my sister is an interior designer. There is no way I'd ask my sister to spend a couple of hours (say 1.5-2) whipping up something for me without some sort of compensation. Btw Aaron, there "might" be compesation also means there might not be.

My gf is a childacare worker. Would it be cool if some stranger dropped their kid off for a couple of hours without her getting paid?

Eventually there HAS to be a line drawn where you don't do it for fun, but it's a business.

For family/friends I do PC work for fun. For strangers it's business.

</font>
I second that, very well put. And indeed we never did say that he TOLD anyone to do it for free. as I stated in all my response i was speaking in general terms.

Of course someone's not gonna appreciate bein told they have to smarten up because they won't do something for free, come on now read all the posts again and it should make more sense if this doesn't.

Copy of an email from someone on www.jbodyalberta.com :

i would be glad to help your friend out with her computer problem. im very good with computers. i also had a spike when i was living in red deer 3 months ago (lighting hit my apartment building and fried the ethernet card as well). anyway, what i could do is pick up the computer from her and bring it over here to my place where i have the internet readily avaliable to download updated drivers etc for her computer. let me know if you're interested.
