Either way is correct if you qualify it by saying "17mi/us gal" or "21mi/imp gal".

I've always thought of it in Imp. gallons. It 'feels' Canadian.

To shorten ex everything's formula a bit:

multiply km/L by 2.84 for mi/imp gal
multiply km/L by 2.28 for mi/us gal

It even says on some urinals..."3.8L/F 1GL/F"...Therefore 3.8L=1 gallon

so would my cars engine be called a 1 gallon in the states if its a 3.8L?

I think it sounds more impressive if you say "Yep...got me a 3.8L under the hood..."rather than "Yep..Got me a 1 Gln under the hood"...

hey I've got the definitive answer - If you check the car section of this week's SUN - they list mileage as both miles/gallon and litres/100 km. If you look at the numbers - they are calculating based on the imperial 4.54 litre gallon.

we live in canada and in canada we use the imperial gallon ........

when transport canada tests cars for the energuide window sticker ....... it's in imperial miles per gallon (4.54l)
