New car: 2000 or 2004 VW Jetta TDI OR 2003 Mazda Protege?
Seeing as I want to create an attractive Audio/Video sound system in my vehicle, I have started looking at a vehicle to do it in (My 1998 GMC Sonoma ext. cab is just not a good platform to do it on). I am interested in a four door family car so I can take full advantage of the "dual-zone" systems out there and the dome video screens available (for the rear). Right now, the 2004 Golf or Jetta TDI is looking nice, and I have my eye also on the Mazda Protoge..
Does anyone have any pros or cons that can help me out?? Insurance is not a factor..

The TDI is great now because of economy and that these diesel engines go for ever. However if you plan on keeping it a while you may want to lay some dynamat here and there, because within a few years those TDI engines WILL get loud and start to rival your sound system.
It's too bad we can't get the 6 speed TDI version they have in Europe.
4 door Golfs are sexy looking IMO.

hands down the tdi ...........my mom bought a 97 when they first came out.........230,000km later still runs like new, gets 55mpg and she still loves it
friend bought a 2001 tdi a while back........gets even better milage (62mpg) and they're a damn nice car .......huge trunk room for subs and suitcases
as for the niosey motor thing
my mom's is still quiet and you wouldn't know it's a diesel when travelling down the highway ...........
take one for a test drive, you'll love the torque it feels way more powerful than 90hp

Yeah.. that's one of the first things in the audio department anyway.. sound deadening.. as for diesel engines.. they have come a long way in the last fifteen or so years. They are much quieter and rival gasoline engines for sound and power. It's too bad North American mentality still hasn't caught on to the advantages of diesel. As for the 6 speed, they are releasing one this fall in Europe, North Am. possibly next year.. next gen. Golf they say.. Anyhow, The VW amenities are great.. full loaded for around $25 000 sounds good to me..

I drove a Protege5 and I can say now it's off my short list. It's cheap feeling, gutless and it drives eerily similar to a Ford Focus. My '92 Protege has more ***** and feels more solid than the new one...they don't make em like they used to...

yeah, back in 98 when I moved to gillam and sold my jetta my dealer told me that vw was working on a new suv and it would be out in a few months .............he was only off on the timeline by a couple years eh .....
I don't see why a tdi needs a 6 speed ..the motor has more than enough torque to deal with the wide gear spacing the 5 speed has ......
the 150hp tdi jetta would be nice though

I watched an episode of Motoring 2003 (Kenzie's Korner portion, to be exact) a few months ago that said that VW and a bunch of other companies were going to be bringing some sweet diesel engines to North America when Canada and the US instate new diesel fuel regulations in 2005 (apparently there's too much sulfur in our diesel for the engines they have in Europe.). Also, a return of Peugeot and Renault to the North American market is coincidentally rumoured to happen in 2005/2006.
