Question Shaw TV/Internet options

Hey folks...again getting the house, setting stuff up.

In the past we got shaw cable (non digital) for free from our landlords, then we also had satellite (shitty package) plus the Center Ice package for all the NHL games. It was mint with that package.

Now, we're gonna need to pay for cable tv and internet.

Digital TV (except movie channels) and High Speed Internet is $80.95. (You essentially have to buy the Modem upfront (not sure on price) as well as a Digital Box (can finance w/no interest currently) $450 or $750 w/PVR).

So, since i have an HD TV, i'm thinkin it'd be Damn nice to watch hockey games (now that they're all over...GRRR) in HD along with other stuff. The regular digital box is $450. The PVR one is $750. (15 and 22 per month respectively to finance.)

Strange stuff is i've had one person (from another forum) tell me the PVR box will show your SD channels better (better converting analog to digital and back to analog) than what the regular $450 digital box will. I just phoned shaw to clarify some stuff, and talkin to the girl she mentioned that she owns both, and the pvr box (connected to a non-hd tv) looks better on SD channels than the regular digital box on an HD tv.

So...i'm fairly set on going with one of these digital box's, likely without hte movie channels (other than on the promotions). $450 is pricey, 14/month is meh, doable, but a pain to have that payment. $750 is even pricier, but sounding like the better option, i'd love to have a PVR, although it's not needed, but if i can make the SD channels look even better thats TIZZIGHT!!!

Can i buy these digital box's elseware? Do i have to buy from Shaw? Can they be bought used or anything? I don't imagine they can really go bad when they get old or have problems can they? (they'd have to be super duper old and probably outta date).

What kinda info can you folks offer???

Take that $450 and invest it in a Free to air sattelite system...HDTV (IMHO) is way over rated!

Shaw/Rogers are nothing but greedy! Save your money.

Secondly, if Bell offers high speed in your area, it's a much better and more reliable service.

Bell does not.

It's either shaw or telus - telus is shady as far as i'm concerned. Don't know much about the free air to air stuff.
