'95 was the last 5.0 mustang. I know this because my boss has one and my work's computer system says so as well.
Differences between the stangs? Lots, including the engine which has bcome progressively less reliable.

IMO, if you can either afford it now or can save up to get a good one, go for the ones with the fully independent suspension. These should have inclement weather handling benefits as well as imperfect road hugging abilities not seen in solid rear incantations.
Engine mods are abundant but you can't simply rework your suspension geometry without major $$$urgery.
I think the Bullit and the CobraR (think that's what it's called) are the only ones with them? Sorry, I'm not from the Ford school so my lingo might be a bit off!
I'd rather have a fun tossable car to drive than one that is blessed with ungodly straight line impetetus in perfect conditions. I think the Bullit has been touted as the most balanced Stang of all time. Check it out if you can find one.
Either way, make that test drive worthwhile.
