I recently just bought an amp and sub as a pair at best buy,

Amp: Kicker DX250.1
Sub: Kicker COMP12

The installation was pretty straight forward and I eventually got everything connected. Both the amp and sub are in my trunk. It worked for the first day I had it but the next day I didn't hear any bass. I turned the gain up on amp and heard a pop. I didnt know what it was at first, but later found that 2 fuses on the amp were blown. I bought a couple more fuses and they popped right away when I connect amp to the battery. I turned down the gain to the lowest setting and it still pops. Could someone help me figure out what is wrong?

Red cord goes for about a foot and connects to fuse


Fuse connects to red wire and goes to amp. Remote (blue wire) connected to head unit with no open wire showing. Speaker wires +amp to +sub and -amp to -sub. FUSES in blue (15) keep blowing.


Ground wire is located under back seat


Settings
Auto Turn on: 12v
Input level was on low
Gain was at medium but only turned it once notch before I heard that pop
RCA connected to head unit
No output
Bass Boost was turned on once and turned off

 

Everything looks like its connected correctly. It sounds like you just got a dud amp.

 

try turn auto turn off to the off position, shouldn't really need that if your using a remote wire. also check all your crimp connections

 

First off, just a safety issue. The fuse should be as close to the battery as possible! Preferably before it goes thru the bulkhead. A fuse is supposed to protect against possible shorts such as some sharp steel part rubbing thru the insulation. Also try to get some of the ribbed plastic tubing to wrap around the power cable where it may be prone to shorts.

Now on to the main problem. lets troubleshoot!

first, what happens if you disconnect the sub from the amp? Does the amp still blow its fuse? If it does then the problem is clearly the amp.
Can you measure the resistance of the sub? is it 4 ohms? Are there any shorts in the sub wire?
Could you possibly have a shorted voice coil? or is it rubbing against the magnet? This could be a short to ground.

Just another note. You do realize that you only have a 140 watt MAX system, probably less than that. I find it odd that Kicker bundle a 4 ohm sub with an amp that can output 250 watts into 2 ohms.

 

^^ this! also if it work the first day, try to revert back to the settings on the amp that did work, befor you tweaked the gain ect
