impedance readings

soooo i've got a plan for a new setup for my speakers, and it involves combining 4 ohm speakers into 1 big 4 ohm speaker. however, when i was check the impedances of all the speakers i realized that one i had planned to use was not giving me a reading of 3.6-3.7 like my other speakers, but instead a reading of 2.6. it as exile shift69 6''x9'' speaker, and the specs on the sheet say its impedance is 4 ohms, but it kept reading 2.6. does that mean it isn't a 4 ohm speaker? i had also planned to use a jensen speaker that i thought was 4 ohms, but that was giving me the same reading of 2.6, but the other speakers i tested that were supposed to be 4 ohms were all reading 3.6 ish.

p.s. don't ask where i got the speakers from, they were all just lying around, i'm just hoping to figure out if they are all in fact 4 ohms

the 4 is it's nominal rating, or "average" resistance, I wouldn't worry about it too much as the load won't get to the extremes of the impedance curve often or long enough to damage anything.

do you mean two of the exact speaker had different readings? like one of the 6x9's had a read of 3.6 and the other had 2.6?....if thats the case I would suspect a problem with the driver. if both the 6x9's read the 2.6, then I wouldn't worry about it at all.

um, well here is a break down of the speaker pairs. 2 6x9 old JBL Loud+Clear series speakers, 2 3'' speakers from a portable cd player i broke, 2 factory 6x9 speakers from a 98 caravan. each of those give a reading of about 3.6 ohms, so i assume they're all 4 ohms nominal. the others i have to choose from is either a pair of exile 6x9s that say on the spec sheet 4 ohms nominal, and and a pair of 6.5 jensen speakers, i forget the model, but from what i can see on their site they would be 4 ohms as well.

the exile and jensen speakers give me readings of 2.6 instead of being closer to 4, so i'm worried that they're not 4 ohms, but rather 2, or 3 if possible. my assumption is that most if not all speakers are designed to be 4 ohms because of vehicle manufacturer specs, so at the same time i'm not too worried, but i'm still uneasy.

the end result is to create two big 4 ohm speakers comprised of the JBLs, the caravan speakers, the cd player speakers and either the exiles (which means i have to devise a way to incorporate the 3 other speakers into the big 4 ohm speaker through the factory wiring) or come up with a way to disconnect the speakers in my van (the exiles) and then plug in the 3 + the jensen. the reason i'm shooting for 4 ohms is because my deck is rated at 22 wrms x 4 @ 4 ohms, so i figure i can deal with giving 4 speakers 5.5 watts to create a big speaker with 22 rms.

sorry for rambling, but i think that pretty much sums it all up
