I have carpenters glue and deck screws, I'll need resin and corner braces, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how long the 45's need to be in order to keep the same port width at 45 degrees from the inside corners of the port.

A 4' x 8' sheet of 1" is $62. With carpet shouldn't all that come to ~$82?

In 2007, the first box I bought was a 1" MDF, 2 cubes @ 36 Hz, slot port, no bracing, no double baffle, not resined, no sanded corners, black carpet, for $300. EHR quoted me the same. Is 1" MDF double the price of .75"? I think I can get a lot more than ~$82, I'd like to make ~$100 off it so ~$200 shipped.

I think it's time to get into the kerfed port business.

i think you need to rethink those cuts.....your going to have alot of waste.....every sheet i buy is actually 49", so i bet u can cut all those pcs and still have at least 4 sq ft left over to go towards the next box!!
good luck with it.....

Yeah I was thinking I'd just use the left over piece for the next box as that cut sheet leaves 32.5 x 35. I left 1" for saw blade thickness between each piece. I don't know what blade they have, and that's actually the best way to get a near-square left over.

Kerf on most blades (the amount of wood it takes out as it cuts) is 1/8"

MDF sheet is 49" x 97"

The box is too small to need to be 1". I have yet to design a box where it was not better to go with 3/4" and a couple of braces. Go with what you like though.

Wood: $62
Carpet: $15
Glue: $15
Resin (why?): $10
Screws, glue, etc: $5

$107.00 hard costs. 3 hours to build (your time may be free, mine is not)

You really think someone is going to drop $200 on it?

Even if someone picks it up so you don't have to spend $50 minimum on shipping it, you're not ahead. If you want to build it for the experience, then great, but avoid trying to make money making boxes. It's a rough game unless you are very good and can build custom boxes to order.

48 x 96 in 1" MDF.

I went to buy the wood, but they didn't gaurantee accuracy, they didn't know the saw blade thickness, and it was $60/hour for shop time. They didn't sound like they could cut it, and they told me it would be cheaper to buy myself a skill saw, and all my dads power-tools are up north. I couldn't fit the sheet in my car (dad has a truck), so I'm going to scrap the 1" MDF idea as 3/4" is much cheaper and closer.

Resin because I was told that it'd make it stronger/air-tight, I couldn't see it, maybe the person meant resin used as caulking.

I could make decent boxes to order, not that I have the kerfing skills or computer generated results. It's not like I have advertising though. I designed that box to work well with the Fi and SSA subs.

Not quite sure what I should do now or if the dimensions were good to begin with, but I definetly want to get another design started.

if you wanna build boxes and sell em.....dont title your thread as buildin my first ported box.....doesnt really generate buisness, box building is NOT a money maker, more of a favor than anything, and you HAVE to learn how to use tools....go buy ur own

Yeah I realize that, but I wouldn't not guarantee my work, I'd give a warranty for the first couple boxes until I get them down, without covering shipping damage. Like if the box leaked air I'd buy it back, and I'd try to sell them for as cheap as possible for awhile. Even $50/box is $ to me, I'm out of work.

I've got the tools, they're all at the cottage though .

The next time someone asks about 1" MDF say NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

i hear your business man and i could very well use some boxes built for cheap if thats what your planning to do as i have clients that need boxes built all the time. If your interested pm me!

Im sorry to hear your out of work. I am also reduced in work as i work for a toyota parts plant and because of the earthquake we are slow. I have taken it into my own hands and started my own little business doing installs. Gotta make money somewhere somehow!

You may want to rethink your cut scheme. Try to make all the same dimension cuts at once so even if they are of by a sixteenth, they are all of by the same amount and everything will fit. Yellow carpenters glue works fine and is easy to clean up with a damp rag. Gorilla clue is a pain because it is very hard to clean and gets just everywhere! The mass production shops probably use a hot glue gun! I made speaker boxes with that once works great but you need a pro glue gun and glue for $500 because hobby guns are not hot enough. You also need to caulk your seems from the inside. I use a nail gun and no screws when I make stuff like this.
You gonna sand and round the edges with a router? you gonna cut the hole with a router? Pleople will want clean finish.

Not sure about this as a business venture. Have you looked at what is out there to buy? how much do they charge? know your competition and if you can't offer something very compelling to your customers there is no reason for them to buy. Shipping will kill you because you dont have the volume for a big shipping discount. You will also have to get a custom shipping box made.. and buy it in volume. You will make more money by joining a landscaping crew!

Other wise good luck!
