Help a noob build his first box for type R 12's!

So my last box was build by a specialty shop. it was high quality, but cost me $350, and quite honestly I felt ripped off because it was just a plain jane carpeted box that didn't even sound that amazing, but i will say it was loud as hell and made everyone say "THOSE ARE TWO TENS?"

Anyways, what I'm looking for is a box for my two 12' alpine type R subwoofers. The only special thing about this box is, each sub will have its own amp. That being said, whatever I make will be two boxes within one.

Does anyone know how I should calculate how big to make my box?
Does anyone know where I can get 3/4' MDF precut (home depot/rona?) and is it any good (accuracy wise)?
and lastly, does anyone know what type of box I should be looking at making? I want it to sound clean, so I think I will go sealed?. I will be pushing these subs under a lot of RMS though (around 800 true RMS each at 1 ohm) so I need an enclosure sized accordingly. Space is not a limiting factor here.

Thanks for reading, I'm hoping to make this box for under $100 and have it wired and running for around $120 if thats possible ($20 for speaker wire, 0 gauge throughout car already!).

What are you going for? Every day listening? SQ? SPL? How much power and why run two amps? Unless you're going for SPL and have at least 2000WRMS+ A prefabbed Bassworx box (newer style) will do just fine. They have the right amount of internal volume (as per Alpine's specs) and sound good. Actually we ran 2 12" R's on the Alpine MRP-M2000 in the box I'm talking about and were hitting 145 (+/- 5dB, depending on the car) cleanly on music. A few people were running the exact same setup and all were comfortably above 140dB. Personally, I think that's plenty loud for daily, but we're not talking about my car, are we

How much do those run you? I'm looking to do something in my truck for everyday and listening to music. I want good SQ when I listen to rock/techno but I also want to be able to shake the crap out of everything when I throw on rap song with a lot of bass. I know that its the box that effect the sound of the subs the most, its also the cheapest thing.

Since I'm not completely mechanically retarded I don't see how hard it'd be to make a simple box lol.

I have about 800-900 watts RMS that I want to pump through each sub. My old CVX's stood upto it fine.

So I think I should be going for a ported box, right? If someone can tell me how to make it to exact dimensions it should sound great/

800-900 RMS is fine for both. Ported is of course going to be recommended. What are the max dimensions this box can be? You mentioned it going in a truck, leading me to believe it won't be a simple box...

Ok, so with enough room along all sides for weird curves in the trunk, and enough room to mount my amps,

I can be about 25 inches deep, 35 inches wide, and 16 inches high.

says here that each 12 inch sub should have 1.3 cubic feet of interior box room (that takes woofer displacement into account).

The vent should be 12 inches by 1.25 inches for each sub.

So .. does anyone have any pointers for me? Or I'd be even more grateful if someone would tell me how big my interior dimensions would have tbe part of my box size. o be?

Err wait this is confusing. So my vent should be 12 inches top to bottom, 1.25 inches wide, and 22.75 inches long, correct? And I assume that shouldn't be part of my box displacement.

the little pamphlet that came with my type Rs lol to quote it specifically, it says,

Vent Area Dimensions: 15 inches squared (12 inch x 1.25 inch)
Vent Length: 22.75 inch
Vent displacement: 0.305 feet cubed

It also tells me some dimensions for a vented box above this:

Optimal External Dimensions: 18 x 13.5 x 16.5 inches
Gross internal Volume: 1.7 cubic feet

But I want to do two boxes, and connect them because I have two seperate amps.

3/4" should leave just over 1.7 ft^3 internal based on the externals... if I haven't messed up the math.

So do I extend it that little bit to get my port dimensions correct?

Another dumb question, it says the box should be 18 inches x 13.5 inches x 16.5 inches ... is that given in the format width x height x depth?

It says I need a 22 inch port length, how do I get a 22 inch port length when my box is so small, I assume I have to do a L shaped port?

I think I've had a bit of a eureka moment as far as my box goes. I'm off to work soon but I'll try to draw up something by hand and upload it, if someone could look it over and approve/dissapprove it.

New to this, but I can hopefully figure something out.
