Paul's new box and amp rack

Well, here is the beginning of my new enclosure and amp rack. Not the best Sketchup pic it was my second attempt at it. Box is 4.5 cu ft after port and displacements. Pic does not include the angles in the corners. Couldn't figure it out in Sketchup...

So 4.5 cu ft ported to 30hz with an F3 of 31.7. Port is 12.5" x 3.75" x 27.95". I haven't designed many ported boxes, so feel free to pick away at it... My setup is in my signature. Of course I will be rounding the port ends and adding corner angles. External dimensions are 19.25 (just under rear glass) x 48" x 14".

I'll keep a picture log as I go. I plan to add an amp rack off the front and glass it to the rear sides of the van. Need to find room for a batt ...

Do the graphs look alright? I'm looking for a musical box that will still get loud enough to compete with.

Hey N130Gv2,

The graph looks good Take your time with the enclosure and it will slam.

(If you haven't already tried this)... try experimenting with different box mountings. I have had good results in the past with isolating the box from the vehicle via rubber motor mounts and metal framing.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Rino

Talking

Looks good.....there is a bit of a learning curve to Sketch-up, your second try looks better than mine did......

Box kinda reminds me of this one:

One day i'll try and make a video on how to use sketchup to draw enclosures.

Just curious as to how many square inches of port there is....

perhaps you could try mounting round flare vents to the bottom rear of the enclosure, you shouldnt need angles in the box either, just be sure to seal the mdf inside the box very well.....apply a coat of resin, dry them sand lightly then apply another coat.

im sure if you heard Yuli's caravan last weekend you would have seen that its musical an very loud with not a great deal of power.....good luck bro!

Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming...

BRG - Yes, it will look a little like yours. Same kind of idea, just right at the back and once the amps are covered I'll be glassing a complete cover to the sides of the van.

Jalat - Thanks for making me make my own Sketchup (JK)... only took a few hours to learn. 4 short tutorial vids of the basics and I was off and running. Port is 12.5 x 3.5 x 27.95"

Bart - I seen Yuli's van and the box he made for the other competitor with the large ports. I don't really have the room for a giant port, and it will be sitting like BRG's box (subs up, sitting on its back). I'll be adding resin inside the enclosure.

Ross - I intended on rounding the 2x4's, but I'm going to look around for some large dowels, Thanks.

So bracing looks sufficient? Will the square inches of port be good? Only using about 2400 watts. Looked good on the graphs. I changed the port and volume about 6-8 times before I was happy with them.

For resin ... Do I also resin inside the port? And I didn't know before reading someones thread, but I'm suppose to resin the outside of the box before it's painted?? Doesn't the paint hold better with primer then paint? Just a couple things I'm unsure about... We'll see how things go over the next few weeks.

Thanks to all, I'll get some more pics up as soon as I buy the wood to start. I've built many boxes, including the one at the show. Just not good designing ported boxes.
