2 12w3 vs 1 12w7
#32
I personally love the SQ from the W3's. That being said I have never heard a W7 so take it with a grain of salt. If I ever got the expendable money I would like to get a ported box to see the difference in SQ and SPL from my sealed.

my buddy actually went from two 13" w3v3's to one 12" w7, and i myself used to own two 12" w3v3's, i have heard both setups countless times in multiple cars now.
either the 13" or the 12" are clearly louder and punchier in the high end than the w7.
low end extension though, the w7 by far takes the cake. as far as sound quality, neither subs are stellar. they are decent, but if you want sq from JL go w6. they are their best all round subs.
personally between the w3's and w7, i would still take the w7. its plenty loud and sounds better on a broader spectrum than the w3's. ...and i believe that one High quality sub is better than two medium quality. Quality over quantity.

I would agree with you if the single sub is being played at lower levels, but once you start blairing, a single sub just sounds too strained, and two subs will keep better composure at higher volumes. Power compresion is another thing to consider.

i really think it depends on the application and which subs you are comparing. There is a big difference between a w3 and a w7. two w7's at half power each, sure i agree they are only going to work half as hard. but a w3 is far inferior than a w7. even with two of them, they need to be pushed hard to match the output of a w7. and from my experience, a w3 pushed really hard doesn't keep its composure near as well as a w7.
if it were two w6 vs. w7, that would be a different story.
i think, just because you have two subs, doesn't mean they are going to sound better louder. add one sub, the sq is still the same. they are the same sub. they will be louder sure. all depends how close the two subs need to be pushed to their limits to match the spl of a better sub, and their sq to begin with.
i think basically, the subs need to be semi comparable to begin with to completely agree with that. and the w3's are not in my books
.....this is just from my experience with these JL products.
i think it just comes down to your wants/needs. you need to know the limits of the sub. If I want my sub to go even louder at the point where it start to loose composure, im not going to sacrifice SQ at all reasonable levels just to have two inferior subs play at louder volumes without breaking up.
lol, this probably makes no sense, but it does in my head

its late. i work in 5 hours. it made sense in my head. lol i don't even know what i said reading it now
unless they are comparable to begin with, i still believe that one is better than two. thats it. nice and simple eh?
