Hey guys,

The JVC Deck decided to call it quits this week, a 2005 KD-G710. Won't read CD's anymore, and radio pisses me off to no extent, so it's time to move on. Since there's not a lot of decks moving used for under 200 bucks, I've searched both Audiosavings and Sonicelectronix for a new one (Just don't trust the refurb's). Anyways, getting to my point...

The JVC I have now has 4V pre-outs. Both my amps are set at a medium setting on gain, around 3V - 2.5V, so I can go to about 35/50 on volume before I hit any distrotion. Now, a lot of the potential decks I'm looking at have 2.5V pre-outs. I'm wondering am I going to see much of a difference dropping back to 2.5V from 4V? Things like having to set the gain on my amps at near full to get the sound I'm used to? I'd like to hear your opinons.

Should I be fine with the 2.5V, or should I keep looking until I find one I like with the 4V?

I think you'll be fine, you may have to lean heavier on the volume ****.

 

Anyone else?All the Alpines I've looked at have the 3 4V pre-outs, but I'm not feeling the display too much. However, I've stumbled across a new JVC Aresenal series that has 3 5V pre-outs with a decent display:

whats more important than voltage is matching the output and input impedences of the source and amplifiers and proper level matching with each other

 

I learned something the other day about pre out voltage you may not know. I always thought it was a constant number, like the SECOND I turned on my Pioneer I was getting 4v from them, but thats not the case (and I proved it with an Alpine PDX1.1000 amp).

At normal listening levels you might only be putting out .2v (for sake of argument), so I dont put as much stock in Pre out voltage as I used to.

Someone here also told me that Alpines preout voltage STARTS at ZERO even when the outputs are set at +15 for example. You might be able to find the thread if you search.

Anyway, maybe you already knew all this, but it was news to me. Lots of smart people on this board here

 

^^^ Agreed. Thats how volume works. As you dial the volume up, the voltage increases. So JVC 5 volt is at full tilt.

So basically, aside from having to up the volume a little, I shouldn't have any problems? (Such as having to put the gain of each gain on it's maximum to get my desired results)

Like I said, I'm still looking around, I just don't want to have to throw a sale solely on pre-out voltage alone if it's not going to have any major effect. There's alot of good priced decks on sonicelectronix with a lot of nice options, but only 2.5V pre-outs.

 

So what kind of $ are you hoping to spend on a cd player? With the CDN $ so low, coupled with shipping charges, import duties and taxes, let me see if I can find a deal on something for you.

 

clarion has nice decks and the good ones like the 585 and up have 6volt pre outs but for the looks its a personnal thing. i like em
