Hey guys.. first post.. been reading alot and have a couple questions..

I'm looking at a 12" Phoenix Gold sub with the following specs:

2x2ohms
350W RMS
700W MAX

Now from what i read i can hook up the two voice coils in series and get 4ohms.

Then would i be good to hook that up to a mono block amp with say 400W x 1 @ 4ohms MAX OUTPUT RMS?

Or am i completely off?

thanks!

No, that's correct. Your amp will 'see' a 4 ohm load from the sub and should produce 400 wrms. Have a good one.

If your amp is 1 ohm stable, I think you would be better off wiring the sub to 1 ohm.

The amp will likely produce more power at 1 ohm, allowing you to keep your gains down and not risk a clipped signal.

400 watts at 4 ohm is the same amount of power as 400 watts at 1 ohm. If the gain is set right on either amplifier, there should be no clipped signal at all. As neither load is a real heavy heavy current draw, I would stick to the 4 ohm load for the better damping factor offered by that amp.

I would agree with MR2NR. You are starting to reach the power limits of that sub anyways. Bridging down yes it may give you more power but if your sub only handles 350rms whats the point. By staying at 400x1 @ 4ohms you get better damping factor and less distortion. As some amps the distortion increases with the greater the load.
