Thanks for the input Paul.
What I'm looking at is beefing up the electrical in my Sunfire to handle a Orion 8004 and 2500D for a daily application with the vehicle running. Not a competition vehicle.

To be honest, it will rarely be turned up but when it does I don't want to take the chance of having voltage drop too low and killing equipment.
I was thinking of adding a second battery in the back or a large Batcap if that would be better. I certainly welcome other ideas.
Thanks,
Sean

you amps will be just fine at 16 volts, what you need is a variable voltage regulator, that allows you to adjust 2 battery banks individually, you would set the output volatge for you car battery to say 13.8 while ruuning and you auxilliary batteries to 16 volts while running(with alternator under load 2-2500rmp)powerline makes the regulator and isolator you need. now i dont know if this breaks any rules or not, i havent competed in an spl competition for years, but i never really was one for the rules, in all cases i used trojan 6 volt batteries, there used to be a compnay that made 6 and 8 volt batteries, they were globelite, i believe they no longer do, i seem to recall some spl guys using the same 16 volt system before but i could be wrong </font>[/QUOTE]Well this seems like a good idea, but I see afew problems with this setup. A 16v system needs to charge at ~18volt's how would I be able to to charge a 16volt bank from a single 14volt alternator?

So your saying this regulator some how increases the voltage by 4 volts to the 16v bank?

I checked out some Golf Cart batteries and I asked for some specs and the CCA is only 175! Should I forget about the golf cart setup?

a standard alternator is capable of putting out like 100 volts.. it's the regulator that changes the output voltage.

So I get a new alternator with no built in regulator and get one of these powerline 2 stage varible voltage regulators to seperate a 12v bank and a 16v bank? Have I got it right?
