Use UPS.... get the tracking number, and fax/email their customer service stating you like to do your own customs clearance.

Only problem is you'll have to go to their office, pick up the manifests, and then goto customs to clear it and pay the taxes owed..... then you can return and pick up your item(s) while avoiding having to pay their ridiculous brokerage fees.

craig.
I like this idea. Does it matter that we live in Canada? The boarder is only 40 min from my house

I do not believe that busses are an option for crossing the border. USPS is worth the wait...I don't know how you got dinged with a $137 charge though...
I assume the package travels in the baggage compartments.

The guy who sent the alternator and regulator valued it at $700usd, about $920cdn.

Boolean:
re Mailboxes etc - doesn't matter if your Canadian, just call them to get details - they do this all the time.

if you live near the border there is no point in paying the $5 cause UPS will hold it for free...when I am at home I am like 30 minutes from buffalo and just get them to hold the package at the UPS hub and go pick it up myself...unfortunately I am not at home right now

So UPS holds it in the USA hub or Canadian Hub? I wouldn't want them to hold it in canada because then I'd have to pay the taxes. Also, when things ship to me, sometimes they go through Windsor which is far away, but Buffalo (Peace Bridge) is 40 min away.

Thanks for the info everyone, I have some good options now
