Actually heat is what kills subs and not distortion. If the coils can dissipate the heat that is generated, it does not matter if the signal is clean or is fully clipped, it will not blow. If the heat cannot be dissipated, you end up with sss (smelly speaker syndrome). A prime cause of this is incorrect gain setting resulting in clipped signals being played in a speaker that cannot dissipate the extra heat or playing the system too long under a sustained loud level and not allowing the voice coils to cool. There are other reasons but these two are more than likely what it applicable to you.

Anyone in the know can tell you that the most current you are going to get out of any average amp is about 25-30% more then what it puts out @ rated power into a nominal non inductive load..... at which point THD skyrockets with no more gain in output....
Its also not difficult to setup a hypothetical situation and figure out THD #s on paper in compairson to crest factor, power output, and average distortion.... and noobs should probably look at some real graphs of output vs THD with a musical signal to get an idea of what an amps limitations really are.....
the statment that someone can blow a 1000 watt sub with 50 watts is rediculous as far as I am concearned.... and IMO most people should be hard pressed to blow a real 1000 watt driver with a 1000 watt amp...
In this case excessive distortion may very well have been a factor... but with the gains turned down a bit the amp is probably still too much for that sub....
