can amps be turned down?

i was just wondering if lets say i have a 400 watt rms amp, but i only end up buying a 200 watt rms sub..can i turn my amp down enough so that it doesnt blow my sub?

anywho, the installer will know how?

ya the level is the same thing. but i wouldnt worry too much about blowing your sub with double the power. its distortion that will kill it. and overheating.

yes the installer should know how to turn it down, well i sure as hell hope they do...
