Deck Question

Hey guys, how important is it to have 4V pre-outs on a deck as opposed to 2v pre-outs? And if you could, please explain to me what the pre-outs are essentially used for, and why it's better to have 4V over 2V pre-outs. If it depends on the system i'm running, lets assume I'm running 2 JBL 12's (300 watts RMS) with a 600W Mono amp, as well as infinity components which would run off the internal mosfet amp built into the deck...

Thanks in advance!

Preouts basically carry a music signal to an external amp, a higher preout allows you to set the gains on your amp(s) lower than if the preout voltage was lower which reduces the possibility of "noise".

I would get a 2 channel for the components rather than running them with the deck.

Hmm, in what case would I truly NEED 4 or 5V pre-outs? I mean, I know it's probably better to have them in every case, but when are they essential?

And is it true that you can't amp your components with the built in MOSFET amp unless the deck has built in crossovers? I mean, someone was telling me that with certain decks, I wouldn't be able to amp my speakers with the MOSFET amp AND wire an external amp with a sub to the reciever at the same time.

Sorry if i'm not making much sense guys

Sounds to me like someone was feeding you a sandwich. Yes you can use the internal amp to drive the components, however, adding a outboard amp is going to bring them to life and will add that all important crossover that most cd player lack. In most cases a cd with a internal crossover only cross over the signals on the preout lines. A higher preout voltage is a good thing, same with a lower output impedence. Consider a cd player from the Eclipse line for example.

Hmm thanks, I've been looking around for a used eclipse or alpine deck with at least 4V preouts and built in crossovers... along with mp3 playback... *sigh* the search continues... One thing I've noticed is that the new eclipse stuff doesn't look as good as the old... I liked the old school two black ***** and black face... now they look mad ugly = /

I had another issue... I'm not sure as to whether i should go with a ported or sealed for my 2 JBL twelves... Let's consider a scenario... You know that kind of bass you can feel when someone drives by with a system pounding... I want that =P I know ported will be louder, but will a good sealed enclosure do the same? I would have just gotten the sealed by the box I want hasn't come in yet for ages

Yes a proper sealed box can yield great tonal response with the impact you are after. What sort of $ on the older unit are you hoping to spend. I might be able to persuad a customer to upgrade to a new one, leaving the old one for you.

hmm, hard to say... like anyone else out there.. i'm on a tight budget... i'm thinkin around 130 to 150 give or take... i know... i'll have to dig... but i've got my shovel out... like i'm just looking for a nice used deck with a reasonable price... i'm def. not a money bank, i help parents with bills =/ Oh... did i mension i'd like a remote to? My last deck was great, but I made the mistake of using the buttons on the face too much and now the volume sensor is messed. Sometimes the volume will just randomly go all the way to 0. Doesn't happen THAT often, but I hate to even imagine what it'd be like once i have bass pounding lol... disaster zone... =/

Thanks for looking into it btw

I used to run an Alpine 7859 with 4v outs (cassette with AInet cd changer).
I upgraded to a 9855 with 2v outs and it sounds great. Better crossovers, more features etc. Don't miss the 4v outs at all.
Some amps require the higher voltage outs, so make sure you match.
I still have the 7859 and 12 cd changer, if you're interested.

Most decks won't have enough power to drive good components. My apline says 50w x 4, but reading the fine print, really it's 16 watt RMS. I run 125 w rms bi-amp to each of my components.

If you want loud, generally a ported box will give you more spl per watt.

Thanks for looking into things guys. As for the 12 disc, i've never been much for cd changers to tell ya the truth. Just lookin for a nice lookin deck (preferably the old style eclipse, or an alpine) with the capability of playing mp3 cd's, with 4V pre-outs (i think it's better to be safe and have them because I don't know what kind of amp i'm gonna pick up), and built in crossovers along with a remote

Question

I just received my new replacement deck and wondering the same thing.

How much of a difference will I hear simply by switching from an older Pioneer KEH-P8200 deck with .2 volt pre-outs to a new Premier DEH-P860MP deck with 6.5 volt pre-outs?

It seems about as big of jump up as I've seen. all three of my amps are 6.5 volt compatable.

Any idea? Will the sound quality be better/clearer or just put less stress on the amps?
