i have had a tough time trying to pick a material type for the trunk, leather, vinyl, something more fuzzy, still torn, got any ideas to share

i will never unpholster the neon's trunk in carpet
lol - you asked for an opinion

And....if you were thinking fuzzy but not carpet then what were you thinking???? Shop dog??? ;)

Dereck Waller 02-25-2005 10:07 PM

What about like Tim's Car, with a quality german carpet? Not the usual fuzzy crap that cheap cars come with.

Number 2 02-25-2005 11:31 PM

fuzzy carpet, someone talking about me?

Tim Baillie. 02-25-2005 11:55 PM

Starterwiz 02-26-2005 01:30 AM

defro13 02-26-2005 07:47 AM

lets just say that the trunk will not be carpeted, i shoudl have clarified what i meant when i said something fuzzy, i never dreamed someone would have thought i meant carpet. tim what was that stuff you used in the caprice you built at illusions, youve got some name for it and where do you get it, jackson, ennis?

Paul Niwranski 02-26-2005 08:14 AM

Ah yes, Tim's "Houlio" which I believe is sold under the name Paylex. That's nice stuff.

Dereck Waller 02-26-2005 11:59 AM

That's the type of European carpet I was talking about. Not the fuzzt crap everyone uses, looks almost more like headliner material, but much stronger.

Tim Baillie. 02-26-2005 07:35 PM

Paylex is a term for the type of material that most automotive manufacturers use for their interior material. The material that I use I have nicknamed it "houlio", the stuff that I used for years in my Toyota, Regal and several other cars is seat material from a 88 base model Firebird. The stuff I used in the cop car was from a GM of around the 91-94 era, but I can't remember what exact car it was. I get it all from Class Sea Textile, which used to be Vancouver Upholstery. It does not stretch what so ever, so it can be a bitch to work with, I have been able to do curved panels with it but they take hours and hours..........the wheel well covers in my Toyota took 5 hours and 3 people a side to do and there is a seem in them which you can't see. If you get a paylex type material and you are going to edge something or seam something make sure it has a black thread count, not a white count or you will see the white back thread when you "bend" the material.

audiochamber 02-28-2005 12:48 PM

saude looks pretty cool and classy if the colour you choose is right!! nothing too bright at CES everyone used really loud colours useing suade... made the cars look too pimpish

defro13 02-28-2005 06:39 PM

that should go great with my ricey flames and poor taste body kit

n0un 02-28-2005 08:43 PM

what type of deading are you using on the floor?

defro13 03-01-2005 04:21 AM

the floor was rhinolined(truck bed liner), then a layer of scosche accumat, then a layer of scosche hyperflex, which by the way is the coolest sound deadening product i have ever used and would highly recommend this stuff to anyone looking for a product of this nature, then under your feet will be 2-3 layers of cascade audio engineering vb4, again an awsome product that i would HIGHLY recommend as probobly the most important and overlooked sound deadening treatment you could ever do, this stuff is usually overlooked due to its cost but i couldnt imagine skipping it

ChizzerZ24 03-08-2005 07:00 PM

Anymore updates???

defro13 03-08-2005 07:17 PM

PEI330Ci 03-09-2005 03:01 AM

It's tommorow. :D

veeman 03-09-2005 01:46 PM

wow! that is one nice piece of metal!!!

Brandon 03-09-2005 02:11 PM

^ yes, also not a cheap one either.

defro13 03-09-2005 02:15 PM

120$, thats it

Brandon 03-09-2005 05:47 PM

it should have been uber expensive, it's 1" aluminum. WTF?

Those holes couldn't have been cut out by a jigsaw and still look that good, they must have been machined or water jet'd out, that costs money.

120 bucks?!

defro13 03-09-2005 07:08 PM

its only 1/2". inch we ran into prolems plug welding 2 pieces of half together and the guy who did it for me has 30 years experience with aluminum and assured me that 1/2 inch would be fine. it was cnc cut and the front brace was welded on, there will be 1/2" inch cross braces welded in after some measuring

Tim Baillie. 03-09-2005 11:12 PM

Looks good, reminds me of the 3/4 slap of chrome plated steel I used in the "Cop Car" back in the day to mount those EV 18" woofer to..............

PEI330Ci 03-10-2005 01:44 AM

Nice work Dave. 1/2" is fine for me with more material removed...doesn't flex at all.

The rest of the trunk looks like you're redoing every panel...I bet that's time consuming.

Are you tapping the aluminum for the Type X sub fasteners? If you do, us a ton of oil or your tap will break..... :(

Adam

Starterwiz 03-10-2005 03:27 AM

You think that back glass is gonna stand up to those X's? The 1/2" might not flex, but it's sure gonna move!!

Lookin' mighty nice!

Drew 03-10-2005 05:20 AM

Damn Sexy

Tim Baillie. 03-10-2005 07:45 AM

Being a R/T, it probably has a sunroof, and being a unibody, what kind of replacement support have you done to compensate for the lost structural integrity that the rear deck offers ?

defro13 03-10-2005 08:00 AM

the new baffle will be fatened with 18 rivnuts and bolts, 10 on the front side that will be mounted to the factory support that runs from side to side just above the strut tower mounts, its probobly the strongest brace in the car, the rest of the 8 will go along the backside along the radius of the rear window. i ahve a friend of mine that builds custom landcruisers and stuff come by the shop to recommend what we should do for reinforcement for the rear of the car and he assured me that the way it will be mounted will be stronger that the factory

andm, we are building new panel for the entire trunk and rear deck, and yeas it is time consuming. the baffle wont be tapped, the woofers will be nut and bolted with the bolts going through from the bottom and nutted on top, the added weight of the woofer should assist in not allowing the woofer to come loose. still trying to decide on a material for the trunk, have found some material that i like, out of an 04 tundra, but ist proving difficult to find, it may have to get good ol' vinyl after all

That's what I first thought too. You had the bolts for the woofers welded to the back of the plate though - way cool custom look

shock211 03-10-2005 11:04 AM

awesome work so far defro. can't wait to see more pics!

JohnVroom 03-10-2005 11:10 AM

Rivnuts are great, I have been playing with some 'click bond' threaded studs they are good for this sort of thing too

defro13 03-10-2005 08:11 PM

colors and material finally decided on, dark grey vinyl to match interior with medium/dark grey suede for dash pods, apillars, b, c pillars, rear deck and various othe highlites, the combination will look great and provide some good contrast

Lethal 03-10-2005 09:15 PM

Damn Dave this thread needs to be renamed Camp Defro. The build pics are awesome and the end result I am anticipating more than I did Alpines unveiling of the X5. :D

defro13 03-11-2005 07:26 AM

the team building this thing is impressive to say the least, james tully, donnie mitchell, kevin robinson and myself are all working as fast as we can to get it done. most of the major building is done with the exception of the dash where more testing will be done before the midranges are permanently mounted, soem may not belive it but we filled the dash mollkd with sand and we have 1.3 cubic feet on top of the dash, now just imagine what you could so with that much space. some very cool tresures show up today, can anyone guess, 1 hint it came from quebec(solen). we figure that we are around 60-65% done. should be finishe in 1 month with small non sq oriented things will be completed like the front remote mount in the console and small detatils like that

Your passive crossover parts showed up? Sweet!

theboy 03-11-2005 02:07 PM

^^^^^^ sorry Dave but that is funny!

defro13 03-11-2005 03:43 PM

if i was going to build an archaic infereior system with passive components, that is what would be coming dukk, but thats not the case, i'll leave that up to you . next guess?
