ummm.......ok?

PEI330Ci 03-13-2005 05:35 AM

Some questions Dave:

Are you removing or modifying the seat latches? They kind of disrupt the really smooth lines you've created with the H900 trim panel.

That rear deck is sweet, deffinitely the way to go with that much power on tap. I had a sound deadening battle with my rear deck cover that has ended with me thinking of doing something like you have. The only difference would be that I'd 'glass right down to the aluminum so that only the driver faces were visible. Keep in mind my aluminum isn't nearly as "finished" as yours is. You certainly got a bargain for $120.

You mentioned earlier about filling the dash module with sand. Was that to measure available volume for the subwoofer, or are you actually going to use sand to sound deaden?

I'm sure you've hear this before, but will you have functional HVAC after the dash is complete? I know you guys get a lot of rain out there, so I can't imagine living without a window defroster.

Great work so far, keep the progress pictures coming!

Adam

defro13 03-13-2005 08:26 AM

those rear seat mounts are very important, there is really no other place to put them, cant go wider and definitely cant go up

the sand was used to figure volume not deadening, keep in mind that when its all over there will be 3 individual boxes on top of the dash, left, right and center woofer

there will be defroster vents on either side of the woofer, custom mandrel bent 1" aluminum tubes that will attach to the heater box theat will attach to 2 custom made cnc'ed 3/16" aluminum vents, the car will also only have 1 windshiled wiper in the center the drivers was removed because it was obstructing the construction of the drivers side midrange box. i will only lose about 10% of the coverage of both with 1 and will help compensate with a longer one in the middle

adam we dont get much rain here, there was only 1mm of registered moisture in december and only 2mm so far in march, i live in the desert her not like the rubber boot wearing guys on the coast

Dereck Waller 03-13-2005 08:54 AM

Looks good so far. WHere are the Eton drivers going? The door? And you are not in the desert, you should spend a summer here!

defro13 03-13-2005 09:08 AM

the eton driver will be tested as the front woofer, initial listening tests in a 16ltr sealed box with the avi sls500 were very good, but i want to test a smaller woofer vented before the final decision is amde and the ston is a great woofer ive heard so i will listen to it and see.

there will be nothing in the doors, all the speakers will be on top of the dash and the a pillars with the exception of the woofers on the rear deck that are for spl only

lets just say the call of medicine hat is not that overwhelmimg, the okanagon the nicest place to live in westen canada in my unbiased opinion

Looking pretty sharp! Keep the pics a commin..

defro13 03-18-2005 07:39 AM

its been very busy at the shop and i have had to spend time at the other car audio stores that we have and have not had much time on the car but the next 10 ndays shoukld see considerable advances, a good sign is that there are parts out for upholstery right now. a fairly significant trunk design and guage design has also added some time to the project. the factory guage cluster is being replaced by a dakota digital guage and a relocation of some of the idiot lites is in order. as well the faceplate for the alpine cd player and f#1 processor is going to be relocated to the location where the guages used to be, should be very cool

Paul Niwranski 03-18-2005 02:29 PM

You're certainly willing to take vehicle modifications a lot farther than I ever could.

Good job.

Merlin 03-18-2005 09:48 PM

looking awesome dave, cant wait to see it all finished man props to the boys and everyone involved.

dukk, this is my own personal last kick at the can to build a car for myself, with obvious help, that i think is as good as i can design and execute for the best sq i think i have the ability to achieve, hence the radical measures, the dash in the end will be totally flat with a slight hump for the subwoofer, with only 6" of difference between left and right midrange/bass'. the car has alot of potential, time will tell but i think thsi car will be special, at least for the guys building it it will be

Brandon 03-18-2005 11:03 PM

Yer the man dude, doing what I wish I could be doing right now.

You're using a lot of the ideas that I had and never got around to doing..but a dash rebuild is also in my near future with my cavalier.

Would it have been possible to do the dash without removing the windsheild?

defro13 03-18-2005 11:17 PM

could have been done without removing the windshieild but taking it out sure made it easier

Brandon 03-18-2005 11:59 PM

Yea, I figured as much, I wish it was fairly simple to re and re a windsheild...because I'm considering it for my car.

I'd like to leave it in there if possible, but it may not be an option.

SUX 2BU 03-19-2005 09:54 AM

Should be cool, Dave. For the flat fiberglass sections making up the top piece of the dash, were those made by just laying down mat on top of a sheet of wood or something?

How hard was it to take the windshield out? You going to try to put it back in yourself or have a shop do it?

You could just get a mobile glass shop to come by your house and remove it for you, then re-install when you need it...

defro13 03-19-2005 10:36 AM

myself and another guy took it out and it sucked, had to be really careful not to break it. a glass shop will reinstall it. we did it ourselves before i had a chance to change my mind, but in the end it saved hours

the 1/4 inch of mat was laid 6 layers thick and themn resined, it was done on a piece of mdf covered in car wax

Dave, for god's sake, make sure that you have private insurance through BCAA or similar with no limits on the theft and collision portion. Stellar work dude.

Just a thought.................3M Green painters tape is cheaper then Duct Tape and doesn't leave that NASTY glue residue every where................

Peter Barry 03-19-2005 06:21 PM

Quick question Dave, have you been able to spend any listening time with that front dash yet? Would hate to have the dash almost done and then to find out it sounds like poo. Not saying that it will, but with all the pics, I haven't seen any with equipment hooked for a "sound test" so to speak. Just wondering if you had any time to audition the speaker placement and such.

defro13 03-19-2005 06:46 PM

like i said earlier, there was a ton of pre build testing done to get an idea of wheather it would be worth it. the speakers were tested in the boxes we wanted to build, then the same size boxes were built and listened to in the car. different locations for tweeters were experimented with but the final resting place for them wiil be dtermined when the dash mids are in and the winshield is in(the testing was done with windshield in)

tim, i love duct tape, the 3m tape is very good though

the dash should be completed next week, i have had some of the panels upholstered and the material is cool

Team_Obsession 03-19-2005 10:12 PM

Looks very good so far

So fill me in man! Whats your overall thoughts? Stage? Image?

defro13 03-20-2005 09:09 AM

with the test boxes on the dash i was quite happy with the width, like ive said before if you want it to sound like it comes from up there you had best put speakers up there. the mids werent in the exact spot that they are now for the initial test, the initial 6 ltr test boxes we build were done to test for tonality and reflection. mi also tested a 4" that i could fit where the 6" were eventually going to end up, this was done to test more for what you are asking about. i can tell you that the results we very promising. its impossible to tell exeactly what its going to sound like until its done, we had to build it first right. this project had shed a new light on how sound in cars works, we alos tested with kick pods and it was disgusting compared to the dash, god awful in comparision, but then again it takes 20 times as long to do it the way we are doing it so it had better sound alot better right, we have spent so much time testing and midifying this dash you cant imagine, i can tell you that the dash is farther along than the pics i show, the pics are about 7-10 days behind

SUX 2BU 03-20-2005 10:05 AM

What upholestery work did you farm out? The vinyl work?

defro13 03-20-2005 12:23 PM

JRace 03-26-2005 11:16 AM

Do you think there will be any blind spots due to the mid loctaions on the dash?
