if you take last years 9847 and compare it to this years 9856, i will give you 1000 dollars if you could tell the difference. the only way you would ever tell the difference between a 05 and 06 model is if you implement the processing capabilities of the 05 models otherwise the d/a converters are identical as is the preamp voltage/output impedance, with the exception of the 9855. and if you don't think the aftermarkets is going multichannel, think again and we will see in 3 years. the day of th4 aftermarket deck is by no means over but oem integration is the future as is multichannel. to say that alpine has taken a step backwards isnt exactly accurate. the quality bof the decks is there, but some features are gone, and im just as dissappointed as you, but to say they have taken a step backwards is a bit dramatic

I'd have to say I was wondering the same myself...I was thinking of upgrading my 9833 to have better iPod and steering wheel control support, but to get the features that I have on my 9833 I'd have to go to the highest end deck they have as its the only one with the Bass Engine Pro, and I'm using the 3-way crossover. It really doesn't make sense to me, as my 9833 cost me around $400 and I'd have to go to a deck worth almost twice that amount.
