i still dont see how you gained 3 db's? being all theoretical the way you are i assumed you would know that 3 db's is said to be twice as loud. so what you are saying is that sound deadening makes a stereo twice as loud?

sound deadening CAN make your spl go up. however, it is application method dependant and it has NOTHING to do with metal vs. butyl/tin foil, that was a trick question. The way you describe it is not "wrong" but that is not the "3 db gain" method by any means. I'm NOT saying it doesnt sound better, it probably does, but claiming such significant spl gain is false.

just to be a dick, lol, alot of factors are missing from that dude's test to make it a universal law of subwoofer in the trunk placement. he has derrived a "best way" for his set up and trunk, doesnt mean it will work for you unless you have same car, same sub, same box, same amount of power and listen to your music at the same volume as he did his test with.

THE loudest trunk car set ups have their subs and ports firing into the cabin, yes, towards the windshield. and by loudest i mean those which you would not be able to come close to had you read every single car audio theory.

I admit I can't prove the 3db gain. however there is a very noticable sound increase in my listening area and less escapeing it . manufacturers claim a potential 3db gain. however. there is a db gain. can't confirm what it is. however it does feel as thow I have a much larger amp. I just do a lot of research! but take all with a grain of salt.

it's all good. just dont believe everything you read online. like the subwoofer position in the trunk article. cuz i personally know some guys who's trunk install proves that test and all of its findings totally wrong.

Lightbulb

everytime a sound wave bounces the percieved sound is amplified..... for example a gynnasium has a loudness factor as apposed to the same gynasium being fully carpeted!
A bare gymnasium is noisier than a carpeted one because of a difference in absorption. A sound wave is always attenuated to some degree through reflection.
the back of my trunk has two layers of fatmat rattle trap extreme. no sound can be heard from my sub standing outside of vehicle in the trunk area. the 3db gain is from the waves that would normaly be lost transfering out of the trunk area in all directsions 360 degrees being redirected with assistance from the fatmat to the front stage of my car. spl actualy increases.....all energy produced has to go somewhere. and since it can't escape the fatmat membrane . the sound waves are reflected towards the front of the car. wich could possibly be greater then 3db depending on the extensiveness of the matting!
The sound wave that is radiated towards the rear is reflected at most the same or likely to a lesser degree by the fatmat. The reason the sound is attenuated to the rear is that it is absorbed by the fatmat - this is how it does what it does. It absorbs sound waves and converts them to heat.

The addition of a sound deadener to a car can give the impression that the car sounds louder but it is really because the baseline environment is quieter. This is why the manufacturers statments always read " It's like having 2x the power!!!"
