e8a problematic sub ?
#1
Well I am having a slight problem with this sub.. No one knows what the rattling noise is coming from it.... maybe it's the cone bottoming out on the spyder..I dunno.. But someone else has the same problem.
LOOK HERE
Is this a design flaw ? Ben ?
The sub sounds awesome but the annoying rattle emitting from the sub, is quite frankly, nerveracking. I think I am going to blow the sub at some point.. I am probably feeding it too much power to teh sub, but shouldnt the sub be distorting then ? Maybe this was the cause for my Zapco amp to stop working..... ???
This is a very weird probelm, that no one can figure out.. not Jon Chaisson, nor the people at Perfect Tones..
ps: I will hopefully get some sleep tonight...

Speaker won't distort if you overpower it - well not until you either melt it or hit a physical limitation - like bouncing the spider off of the top plate which is what it sounds like you are doing.
Personally I like to see a full clearance driver but with a long stroke like that in a small frame it gets difficult for sure. Usually a manufacturer will go to a progressive suspension and/or braking coils if there is an excursion problem but seems not in this case.
A subsonic filter is a good idea in any system. I would look into getting one.

well I just checked the subsonic filter..
I have no idea what it's set to..but it's the second option from the bottom on this pic..
It starts at 0.7 and ends at 2.
Mine is set to 1/4 the way up.

I think you are finding out that any 8 inch sub has limitations. Does it make the noise all the time or only when playing relatively loud. I heard a 8W7 the other day and while it is impressive for an 8, it was still an 8 and the guy had it cranked so loud it was distorting massively, he should just get a bigger sub. Not sure if that's what your problems is though.
