A few newbie questions...

Hello all,

I'm new here and I'm also new to car audio mods. I'm shopping around for a good sub/amp. There are a few things I'd like to know so that I can spend my cash wisely. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer them...

1- As a trance/techno listener, is it true that a smaller sub (10'') will sound better than a 12'' and bigger sub?

2- Would you recommend going for a good sub or two decent ones, keeping overall sound quality in mind?

3- Are these inexpensive all-in-one combos like this one on Ebay worth it or is there a catch? (see below for links)

I've spotted a few subs that seem to fit my needs. What do you think?

- Infinity Kappa Perfect 10 VQ
- Eclipse SW6000
- Clarion SW10X

Thanks

if i were you i would go with one good 12" or two even. you say that you are a techno listener, you must listen to other music too right? in my opinion i like 12" subs for every application they can play low if needed and they can also keep up. now a ten can do this too. but i like 12's it kinda depends on your box too they are tuned to different frequencies( cant spell) . so if you want tens then get a ported box prolly but not one too big for the subs.

Bring one of your techno CDs to a stereo shop, have them play it through a few different subs, I find that my 15 will keep up with the beat of anything I listen to so I cant see a 12 not being able to

Pretty much anything that plays on di.fm's trance channel.

Edit: Well, I decided to go with these... they seemed to have decent reviews.

Eclipse SW6000 Sub (US $64.99)
Eclipse EA2000 Amp (US $114.99)

For the wiring, box and the rest (which I have no knowledge of) I was told to go to Madison in Montreal...

Those Eclipse model numbers are NOT a match. Its a dual 4 ohm sub and an amp that won't work at 2 ohms.
Plus that 175 wrms (@14.4V) is not enough power. You won't be happy.

If you want to stick with eclipse, step it up to the SW7000 and the XA1000.

Those are quite expensive though...
Edit: I sent an e-mail to the seller explaining the situation and I'm hopign that he will accept that I reimburse him the EBay listing fees so that I can buy the right AMP from him...

Is the difference between the SW6000 and SW7000 really that big? I don't think I really need that much power... the SW6000 is 64$ and the SW7000 is 151$ on Ebay.

I'll be going for an Eclipse XA1000 amp and SW6000 sub after all... thanks for the advice guys, especially Tom.F.1 for pointing out that the sub and amp I originally chose were not a match!
