Help with distorting 6x9's
Here is an idea.... turn off all the amps and crank your HU to the point where your 6x9's are distorting now.....
If they are still distorting, then it's because the HU is clipping... not because the subs are making them flap around....
While it's a possibility, I don't really think a couple punch Z series 12's are going to exactly pound the snot out of your 6x9's....
If it is the HU distorting... follow my advice and turn up your amplifier gains so you are getting max volume from the amps without having to crank the HU....

Why not? Loosely, cone area for the 12 is ~95sq-in and for a 6x9 is ~38sq-in so it would seem entirely likely.. I'm betting even the Z12 has more xmax than any 6x9 too so displaced volume is even more...

But keep in mind his trunk is not a sealed box....
Anyway.. you may very well be right.... but I personally don't think that's the problem for 2 reasons...
1- I've seen much more powerfull trunk systems with 6x9's IB, that didn't have much of any problem to speak of....
2- 6x9 cones flapping around sounds like just that.... And short of an actual 'flapping' sound it would screw with group delay....
sounds to me like he's hearing harmonic distortion.... not flapping/cone breakup or poor group delay...
(although I could be wrong)

^ For sure your suggestion that it is merely his deck power getting all dirty is the other thing that is likely the problem.
I discounted that as the cause because he said his fader was almost all the way forward but I suppose crappy deck power could still be the problem.
