Only if it's out of phase with the rest of your speakers in the car and you're not running a high-pass filter on those speakers.

Having your sub out of phase with the rest of your system will inevitably cut down on the bass, albeit this might not be noticeable to you depending on your setup and your ear.

Another thing to consider is your subwoofer may have a lot of motor assembly noise, that is, noise that comes off the back of the woofer, but this shouldn't be a problem for any decently designed speaker.

Mind if I ask why you're planning on running it inversely?

I think the main reason people invert their subs is either to show off the bling on the back of the sub (chrome, gold plated, or just a huge freakin magnet) or to make up for any volume the sub might have taken up in the box to make up for an improperly sized box. So far in any cases i have seen myself, inverting didnt make any difference, other than wut tg989 pointed out already, the noises u get from the motor assembly. I had a Visonik sub that made a bit of air noise when it was inverted, so i preferred it to be mounted normally. In a trunk it wouldnt be noticable. Only thing i dont like about inverted subs in my case is that they take up more space in the trunk that way. Im short enough on space as it is.

if you do not change the phase, the sub is playing "into" the instead of playing "out" of the box...do what you want with my advice...but think about it..

It doesn't really make a difference to the sub. As an SQ competitor, I'm sure you've changed polarity on a mid or tweeter before, right? It's the same concept. When you inverse mount the subwoofer, you are changing the absolute phase by 180 degrees. You can accomplish the same thing by changing the polarity. When you do both, you end up with the same result as if you had wired the speaker with a standard polarity and mounted it in a standard fashion as well.

However, the absolute phase is not important. What is important, though, is the relative phase, by which I mean whether the sound pressure generated by your subwoofer is in phase with the rest of your speakers once it reaches your ear. It is quite common to have a single midbass, for example, that has it's polarity reversed and is out of phase, in an absolute sense, but is actually in phase at your ear.
