Issues with steering wheel controls on 2001 dodge ram

My step dad is having issues running an amp with his dodge ram, he had a input converter and said when he used it he lost his steering wheel controls... what gives? any ideas?

you didn't plug in the smaller (roughly 1-3 wire) harness...or the attached to the wrong speaker wires. Does the amp work?
