Need Alpine schooling

first of all there is no old 700 or 701, the 5 whatever is nothing like the 701, the 700 did have so wierd issues none of which were that big of a deal but for the sake of arguement i would stick with the 701. trying to navigate the 701 menu through any of the cd players that can control it is a pain in the *** and should be avoided. get the ruxc701 controller and you will be happy. get the dva9860, they can be bought right now for as little as 300 brand new, use the optical output to the 701. using the rca outputs from any cd player into the 701 is dumb because you will be going d/a, a/d, d/a......stupid right......by using the optical out you will only be going d/a once and taking advantage of the 20bit k grade burr brown da converters in the 701.......

I have the 701 brain unit, and the 700 controller ( I like the green colour). As far as mounting, I put it in the dash because it looks great, easy to control, and was easy to do in my car. As far as sound goes, it's the bomb. If you like tweaking, this unit can keep you busy for a long time. If you use an Alpine deck with Ai-net, you can hook it up through that, which is what I have for now until I install a DVD unit (then it will be optical). With the controller, you can use any other brand of head unit through analog inputs.

Calm down dude! LOL.
Lots of people go from digital to analog, back to digital and then back again. No its not the straightest line between two points but you have to work with what you have. The 510 is similar to the 700 and the 701. It is a little harder to use, and cant do as much but its still a decent unit. Obviously the 701 is a newer, better unit. But the 510 might be enough for many people.
If you have or are willing to get the 9965 or one of the Alpine screens you could forgo the controler. Each of them doa great job of navigating the 701's controls. But if you decide to get the 9860 or similar head unit, get the controler, it will save you lots of time.

Unless you want surround sound, I do not understand the great advantages of the 701..
I have an alpine 9811 and its bigger brothers like the 9813 and 15 have almost everthing that the pxa-h701 has
3 way crossover
time alignemnt
equalizer (ok maybe not 30 bands)
th 701 and controller cost a fortune
What are its advantages?
By adding a pioneer cd635 3 way crossover to my alpine 9811 I get:
sub out from alpine
and 3way xover from pioneer for mid bass, mids and tweets
The 701 is only a sub plus midbass plus tweet xover...
your opinions would be appreciated

I think it was mentioned in another topic, I think by Dukk that you can run a 4way (so 3way front + sub) with the H701 (possibly 700 since it's more or less the same).
In addition you can hook up through optical cable, eliminating the digital/analog convertions.
And if you look at the screenshots people are posting when having a screen (dvd) unit hooked up to the processor, it makes it easy to set it all up. I'm more used to "computer like" interface to set up various options, rather than having several menus to jump through.
Here it is. Not much, he just mentions that. Maybe you can find more if you search.

Basically you have two Front 1, two Front 2, two Rear 1 outputs + sub outputs. There you go .

Your right in many ways. The 701 is overkill for most people. If all you need or want is a few bands of EQing and a basic crossover and TA then there is no need for the 701. But if you want an 8 channel 30 band EQ (choice of Parametric or Graphic) full phase control, TA and crossover (up to 30db per octave) then the 701 might be for you. It's actully a really good stereo piece, not simply for surround. It's like choosing between a Lotus and a Honda. There both cars but they arent the same.

I too agree that one can easily have an excellent system with analogue crossovers and no EQ or an analogue EQ. IMO most people overbuy on processing.
I do have a 3way front end plus sub, and it was the main reason I went with the H700 over some of the other processors. That and I got a smokin deal on a very lightly used one.
