Need your opinion

Hey guys, I'm new to car audio and I need a professional opinion. I am lookin to upgrade to a set of 12" subs from the set of Kicker Comp 10s I have now. I have two possibilities in mind: the kicker CVR, and the Kenwood KFC-W3011. What do you guys think? Money is tight right now so I can't splurge on somethin really expensive. I am open to suggestions on other subs also. Thanks guys!!

Question

Without knowing more about your current set-up, it's hard to give you a good answer...Why are you looking for new subs? What are you hoping to accomplish by changing your speakers?

Info on what kind and size of box, amp(s), mids and highs, vehicle year and type will make it easier to help you out.....

Sorry guys, like I said I am new to this stuff. I have a 2001 Mazda Protege. I am looking for new subs because I want something a little louder. I would like to get into the 120-130dB range, while still having some good SQ. The subs are in the Kicker prefab ported enclosure, I am running a Kenwood KAC-8104D mono cahannel amplfier with 8ga Alpine type R wiring set. For speaker I have a set of Clarion "Good Series" 6x9s in the rear, and 5x7s in the front doors (not amplified). My budget is around $350-$400. I will be swapping out all of the speakers for hopefully some Alpine type Rs (amplified) and Dynamat the whole car. Hope this helps guys! If you need any more info just let me know and I'll try my best to fill you in

Alrighty then.....in no particular order and keeping within your budget......

First thing I would do is get your mids and highs up to a comparable level as the subs are now.....one reason your bass doesn't sound as loud as it could is the frequencies just above the subs cutoff are much quieter than the subs themselves....those harmonics are needed to fill out those notes from the subs.

By all means deaden your doors....front ones first if you need to space it out due to $$ concerns (which everyone here has....this can be a very expensive hobby.... )

Next step is to upgrade your power and ground wires to at least 4gauge....this will be necessary for the next step which is to get those 4 speakers amplified. You will be surprised how much louder it will make your car without spending a dime on more subs. This will also keep in line with your goal of better SQ. Since you already have aftermarket mids and highs you should give them a chance to perform as well as they can....you may be surprised how good they sound at this point and if you eventually put in new ones they will have to be amped anyways.

4Gauge power wire kit - $100 approx.
Door deadener kit - $100 or less
Decent 4chan. amp - $200 or so

Taxes and install labour would still be on top of this, you may be able to get a better deal at a shop by getting it all from one place....don't be afraid to bargain with the shop owner....if you aren't comfortable talking to one move on to the next...... If you have friends that can help do the work you can save $$ that way as well....

Upgrading your subs at this point will only get your bass louder, not your system....those subs are in the right box and that amp should be doing a decent job driving them....if you take care of these other things first you may find you don't need to upgrade them.....

HTH

i've run the KFC kenwood 12" and it didnt like being given 400rms thats for sure (thats what its rated at). Just didnt sound all that good on the lows. I have heard nothing but good things about the CVR's. Give them the need RMS power and then will shine. Be prepared to build a ported enclosure for them though, and say goodbye to the majority of your trunkspace

Trunk space? Pfft...Who needs that? lol. Thanks for your input jalat, but I think I am going to take big red's advice for now and amp the speakers. I will deffinitly look into the CVRs when I get the money. I have also heard nothing but good things about them.
