if they're going to get kicked, use carpet. If you want it to look better, vinyl. Count on an hour or 2 for sanding/bondo/sanding and if you do it right, everything should turn out ok. Give it a try. The only bad thing that can come out of it is it looks crappy, so you carpet it. No big thing.
