oh also my buddy has some kaption spl-1200;s that hes had since we were in high school and hes been beating the out of them on a really crappy amp for the last like 6 years and hasnt had a single issue, but they are pretty beefy subs that require a lotta power and are mainly spl based not so much for SQ, so id still say stick with alpine

Given you are old (by your own account, I actually don't know) and don't care what people think, I'll let your bragging rights advice slide. It's actually works the complete opposite of the way you think it may (in my area anyway). I would give zero bragging rights to anyone running Alpine, JL, or Kicker based only on their gear (bragging rights for setup may be different but gear oriented = zero, unless they are top of the top line) and expect zero in return. Not because they aren't great products, I'm sure they are, but that's what everyone and their sister runs, other than Sony or other cheaper brands. Bragging rights come into play when you have something no one has (or, at least, very few, depending on the population). The rarer the equipment, the better. It shows you did your homework and made a wise informed choice as opposed to just getting what seemed to be the 'best' option. If anyone second guesses a certain brand because they haven't heard of it there is always google and youtube, which is accessible by many virtually anywhere, to prove why one made a certain choice.
On Topic - I have no experience with any of the gear mentioned and therefore cannot make an informed opinion. I'll leave that to the others.

you're gonna let it slide..thanks man! Anyway you missed the part where i said,"On top of that, your non-car audio interested friends..." those are the ones that really don't care about geeks with loud stereos. Given the OP's choices, it tells me he's not into the flavour of the day brands (nothing against them...some are really good..sundown and ssa make a decent product) but I'll bet you that most of the experienced guys that are into music all use mainstream brands...pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, RF, Mtx, JBL, etc..and virtually all of them will tell you that the subwoofer is the least important piece in any system. So, I have no doubt that your car audio buddies are all in awe at your unknown brand of subs, but normal people whom I'm sure even a car audio nut like you must know...will certainly be more impressed by the Alpine name than those. Once again, not that that should be your reason for geting them...they are very well built, tough, great sounding, good looking, and extremely well priced at the right places.

Back it up with some technical info on why this is a bad design then (it's ghey doesn't do much for your arguement). And also, point out why the SA-12 and the Dcon are better (and we're talking about the new Type R so any of your thoughts on the old design are out-the-window). I'm not an Alpine fanboy nor do I dislike the other drivers, I'd like to see you back up your statement though in the interest of the OP.
OP - the multi-roll surround is used to maximize cone area. More cone area=more bass. These big fat surrounds on the other drivers just makes the cone area smaller. The Alpine has much more Xmax than the others as well so they can't even use the excuse of needing the big fat surround because of high-excursion.

^^that's the kind of evidence that's pretty useless. Truth is, even if you heard the Sundowns and Alpine side by side, that still doesn't mean anything. Unless they are both optimally set up in a proper system in the same car using the same electronics and support speakers...you really can't compare them. I've heard really great sounding subs sound like crap in bad installs..JL 12w6 for example, which is universally praised as one of the best sounding subs, sounded horrible in an chevy impala that I was working on...the problem was a poorly sealed box that was obviously cut with a jigsaw. My first thoughts were, this is an expensive sub, why wouldn't you get a custom box built for it? Point is, any decent sub should sound good and get plenty loud if installed properly. Some may be louder, some may sound a little better, but most should sound decent as long as the rest of your system is decent.

Maybe you're right. I suppose anyone who has ever asked me what kind of sub(s) I've had has always had some remote (even if very slight) interest in car audio. Anyone who wasn't interested at all just plain didn't care and never asked. Maybe I'm just biased because I don't like running what everyone else has because it makes me feel special when people ask me for more beyond just what kind of subs I have and then saying "Oh, I've heard of those before," and that be the end of it. Maybe I jumped the gun on correcting you and maybe it's just me. sorry

Hey Steven,
Looks like you went to all the stores in Cranbrook??
Personally I think if you are looking for sound quality like you stated, it is a no brainer "Kaption". If it is indeed the SPL series subs your looking at that is a great deal, and they hit incredibly hard, and sound awsome. I have loved their product since the beginning, and they are a Canadian company, this is not Chinese stuff if you know what I mean.

If it was me i would "!!PERSONALLY!!" go with the type r's.
atm i have a set of rockford power series and the type r's i had would do a happy dance around them in almost everyway.
u can get away with smaller box.
they take a royal beating.
They just seem to be the sub thats just happy to be alive

Regarding your last sentence, yes Kaption is a Canadian company, but that doesn't mean the stuff is made here (and if it was it wouldn't automatically mean it's better than Chinese stuff).
