Hi Everyone,

I am getting ready to take the plunge and install a system in my truck. It's been almost 10 years since the last time I had a system. Finally I've got my own vehicle and the cash to go all the way instead of just throwing my deck in my ride!

I've got a 2008 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab without the Alpine system. So far I have installed my Pioneer DEH P-5900IB and replaced the stock front 6.5" speakers with Polk DB651's.

My plan is to move the DB651's to the rear doors and install MM6501 components in the front doors.

I am eyeing the Kenwood XR-5S 5-channel amplifier and the Kicker TCVT84 enclosure+sub due to the very limited dimensions behind my second row of seating.

I am nervous about having a full class D amp (read a lot about tinny mids and highs with this class compared to an A/B setup) - but really like the compactness of the amp and it's power output.

I listen to mainly rock, alternative, and pop but wouldn't want to have to retune every time I want to play a little rap music.

What do you guys think? This would be about $1000 for all the materials and I will install myself.

 

I would look to get a custom made sub system instead of the pre built one as i find those to be very limited in what they offer. The amp you're looking at delivers 350 watts @ 2 ohms so i'd look for a sub (preferably a 10" or 12" if it'll fit) that handles around 300-400 watts and is dual 4 ohm voice coil so you can run it at 2 ohms (coils wired parallel). D class amps are as good as a/b in sq nowadays, so don't worry about that. The rest looks good!

 

OK thanks for your advice. I don't know anything about building my own box for a sub. I would need an enclosure roughly:

18 wide x 10-12 high x MAX 5.5 deep in its deepest part.

What kind of subwoofers does that let me use?

 

well with that space it'll be very tough to find a 10 or 12 that'll work...this one seems to be the closest match i can find...handles 350 watts rms, dual 4 ohm and works in a .5 cube sealed box. if you can find a little more space that would be great....0.6-0.8 would be ideal...but I think this 10" will outperform the 8" even with the smaller volume and can utilize the amp's output. However, if you stuff the box with about a pound of polyfill it'll have a virtual volume of about .65 cubic feet which will work well.
