Question for the installers - simple, reliable head unit.
#1
Hello!
Hoping one of the installers on this board can help with a simple question.
My brother is looking to buy a basic, powered CD player as a Christmas gift. This is NOT going to be used for any big system, and will be used to drive the stock speakers.
Not looking to spend big $, but would like something that has a decent amount of on-board power. Don't want to spend money on useless display features etc - just want a good, basic but reliable head unit.
I am so out of touch with the current equipment, I can't help him out... but I know there are enough of you guys here that deal with this day in and day out that can point me in the right direction.
Also, can you give a rough idea of the $ associated with your suggestions?
Thanks!

Either Pionner or Alpine entry level HU's are very reliable and good bang for the buck.
Pionner are less expensive but you get more for a few bucks with the Alpine.
I think you can buy the pioneer 1600 for like 140$ on sale.

Eclipse CD5405. Dealer installed = 3 year warranty and replaced free of charge in the first year. Like most cd players, it has a 50w x 4 mosfet amp. It is a simple to use cd player that is not designed to be a fancy light show.

+1 for the Eclipse. I put a CD5415 in a family member's car, basically the same as the 5405 plus MP3/WMA and sub output. Great no-frills entry-level deck, decent sound, well built, ESN security, and no stupid removable faceplate to lose.
