Thanks for the suggestions.
This wasn't really the help or support I was looking for.
But ya thanks again.

I am all for you having your own business, don't get me wrong. However, if FS is the bread and butter I would not be setting myself up for failure. You need to realize that you are a number and a number only to them. If your number comes up, it is up. Regardless of whether or not your GM is aware of it and his personal views on it, he still has a duty to report it as well. Once it comes across the desk of the person that does care, that is the day that you are out of a job.

Realize this. Future Shop is in the business of selling car audio. You as a employee are there to do your job. You are also a business owner and your job is to keep FS from getting sales when you could have them all on your own. It does not matter that you don't mention it at work or not. You are actively working against your employer and sooner or later they are going to notice and do something about it.

Can your business support you (and a family?) in these economic times if all of a sudden FS says you are done? If the answer is no, time to put the business aside and concentrate on your employment with FS so as to ensure that you remain employed. Can you ask for a raise, sure you can, the worst thing that can be said is no. It is how you chose to address this issue in the first place that is the problem. I have been in your very shoes dude, lots of other people have. It took me a long time to realize the error in my ways. Eventually, my number came up.......

Don't you have your own Business and have Alpine, Sundown Audio among other Suppliers that gave you a contract for your shop.

So why still work for F/S if you have all this
Sorry I'm not craig. For the most part(i speak for my self here) I enjoy my job. It's just very frustrating to be in a postition were you are making money for someone else who's not earning it. There shouldn't be such a large gap between what we get for doing the same work. It's supposed to be that when you work hard and perform at a high level you should be rewarded for such.

As a supervisor at bb I would fire you on the spot .
The people that come to your house should be refured to fs to buy and install. That stuff you are taking away from fs your pay check can't get bigger if you take their sales away .
Plus you sound like a winey b*t*h.like my grand dad told his guys "if you are better than what i pay you find someone to pay better if you can't find someone to pay you better than im paying you the right amount "plus dont think they dont know who does what and when at fs your lead could do more if he wasnt doing his job and baby siting you .A pay hike sould be something they bring to you. show them you should get one by working hard showing up on time everytime taking shifts when they call you at 10 am and need you by 11 am it takes more that shoving decks in a dash .hope this helps you gat a pay hike LoL

Which I will agree is just wrong. I have customers ask me all the time if I do work on the side.
My answer.... "No, I do not do work on the side."
My GM is also fully aware that I am doing my own work on my own time.
When I am at work at FS, I am an employee of FS, no one else.
I dont make any mention of any products that I sell.
Even if what I would be able to sell them would be a better fit for what they want.

I have my own dedicated customers that come to me at home.
I only do custom work from home, nothing basic.
I've been working out of my house close to 10 years.
I am also not selling on the internet.

And I have to start somewhere with my growing business.
I need a full time job to pay the bills and what not since the bank doesn't seem
to want to help me out in the way of financing to get up off the ground.

Anyways how did this get SO off topic?

As for a raise, does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about asking tactfully?

Dude, if you had a side business selling pots and pans or something else other than car audio it would not be a conflict, it would just be a guy making a few extra bucks.

hi seductive sounds... i work for fs. as an level 3 installer and make said wage. i have been with this company since 2000 and know the policies very well... when you signed on with f.s you signed a letter stating that personal work, outside of f.s. that is deemed "same as" work. is grounds for immediate dismissal. and on this forum there are over 20 f.s. installers as well as 4 or 5 team leads, soooooooo my advise is to proceed with extreme caution with this topic.... that being said...... if you want a raise the best way to approach it is to talk with the team lead and discuss with him your work over the past 6 months. he will tell you what he has seen from you as well as what is expected of you and have you been meeting the companies expectations, and you can tell him why you feel you should get a raise. if you are not comfortable with your t.L. then have the ops manager involved in the meeting. good luck with the raise, and remember the current economic situation and how f.s. is cutting back everyones hr, and eliminating certain positions.

Hey

I did not make that reply to cause all this trouble for you not at all.

Just didn't know why you still worked for them with everything that you had

Myself on this subject is

When you Sign out and go home off that employers property that’s your own time to do what you want in my eyes, if you install a amp for friend and he gives you $20 for helping him why should you be fired if you go to work the next day.

There’s many people that Register a Business Name and just keep it for when they want to go solo so it doesn't get taken from them. Same with a Website name so they hold the rights.
