siriusly ghetto install

So this guy I work for a bit had me out at his shop over xmas.... while I was there wrenching on classic mercedes cars his wife also wanted me to install a sirius radio in her van...

do they really expect people to use the suction cup mount and power supply plugged into the lighter port ? I wasn't sure of the best spot for the antenna so I called tech support and they told me to stick it on the roof and just run the wire through the doorjam..

well I took apart the supply and hard wired/mounted it inside the dash... screwed the radio's mount in place... and ran the antenna wire through the dash and a piller then underneath the head liner and outside the van through a hole drilled under the roof racks.... much better I think...

I guess future shop wanted $80 to install it... what would there install involve ?

it involves doing it right!, the new sirius have a 12 - 5 volt conversion now so u cant just chop the cigaret lighter plug off, you must either wire a female cigaret lighter into an ignition source or take the plug apart, score the pos + and neg - and solder wires directly to them, then we find or drill a hole through the fire wall, loom the wires so they dont break as the sirius antennas and xm are really weak, then we run the wire on the outside rubber seal of the windsheild, mount the magnet on top of the roof and cover teh excess wire with provided adhesive gaurd, finally the radio is most often mounted at the bottom left of the dash and a pilar as to keep visiability and being close enuff to control with less distraction....

nice to know the local box isn't out to shive anyone, although the hardwire for the psu was apparently not in the cards for $80..... good tip on running the antenna wire; I was wondering how else I might do it...
