Good friend of mine has an old kenwood excelon PS400M monoblock (600W RMS @ 2ohms), very powerful amp
I used to like kenwood back in the day, but I havent had much of an opportunity to try any of their newer products.
From what I have heard, their decks are pretty good quality, and of a reasonable price. As for their speakers, I have heard less positive comments.
Another brand you may want to check out is Alpine. You'll probably have to pay a little more, but you'll get a higher quality product.
Good luck

kenwood has come a long way in terms of screens and headunits..
still don't believe them to be a "speaker company"
I'd look to other companys for speakers, headunits, well there up there.
No experence with there amps.
been told there home stuff is good ?

The head units are pretty good. Lots of good features that other decks don't have such as the front and rear crossovers are independant unlike most other brands. For speakers I think that Pioneer is the best sounding of the inexpensive Japanese speakes.
I'm running a Kenwood KDC-X559 deck (it's a lower end excelon series.
I bought the deck first because it looks great in my golf and second becuase of the features. I like having subwoofer level control and being able to control sub frequency. This deck has an aux in and an amp mute so that it will shut down the amp if you're running an external amp to increase the output voltage.
The one complaint I have about the deck comes from when I was using it to power my speakers. If I had been driving for a while and had the volume turned up around 70 - 80% the sound would start to break up. I'd take the CD out and it would be so hot that I could hardly hold it. This problem was solved when I added an external amp for my speakers.
Other than that problem the deck has treated me extrememly well.
