Hey CG, I've got the cf mids like you but my tweets are 3/4" and two sets; one in the kicks, the other on the A-pilars. Not quite the same setup but regardless I don't find them laid back or too bright. Just right.
I've had mb quarts where you gritted your teeth through the highs, and the Fusion set where I could use 'laid back' as a description.
The cdt's are between those and the best I've had.

I'm still scratching my head over the treble control not helping, see if you can knock down some of the upper mid like defro suggests.

defro is right also here. Many people say that its the tweets that they find too harsh when in reality it can quite often be coming from the mids and be in the 10kHz range. This can also be very true for the CDT's as CDT crosses the mids and highs over alot higher than most companies.

If your deck has a mid control on it try adjusting that and see what happens. If you don't have a mid control try putting a shirt or something over the tweeters to see what happens, you'll know very quick if its the tweet or mid causing the excessive treble. Let us know what you get for a result.
