Type Rs got the double surround I think for 2005. So if your's has it then it should be OK. As for repairs, Alpine does not repair the speakers. The only real repair that can be done is to resolder the tinsel to the main terminals. But I have never had any tinsel problems on any of the alpine subs so it would be very unusual if this has been done by someone that tried to fix it. I dont recall if the alpine subs had a tinsels that where covered with insulation.
How are you wiring the 2 voice coils? Maybe that is the problem. Have you measured both coils? Are they both 4ohms or 2 ohms? are both good? is one open or shorted?
If it has a double surround then it is new and the model numbers are
SWR1222D for 2+2
SWR1242D for 4+4 ohm
if it has a single surround it is the older type and
SWR1221D for 2+2
SWR1241D for 4+4 ohm
if it is a 10 inch sub then just substitute th 12 for 10 in the model number.
You can get full manuals for old and new alpine directly at the alpine web site.
What kind of box is it? Get the alpine manual and see if the box is anywhere near the recommended sizes for sealed or vented.
