Us and Them !
heres a question for evryone. How much longer is our industry going to last? Are the changes that the manufacturs are doing going to end our jobs? what happens with 36 or 42 volt? is there a good living to be made doing this? with all the changes, will the big boxes still find this profitable?
recently ive had a great offer to install high-end home audio. the future of that industry seems directed and strong
lets bounce this arround

Is high end home audio strong? I would think that with the focus on home theatre and the performance average Joe can get even with $1000 'theatre in a box' sets that it is an even more niche market than car audio.
I'm sure there is a market, but is it growing?
IMO car audio will be viable for some time. Things may change, ie in 5yrs we may not even see aftermarket radios but will rather be selling 'Cleansweep' type products to every customer, but the industry won't die.
Further to this I would look at the custom car industry. New cars are a bigger PITA than ever to modify/upgrade and emmisions testing makes it even harder but the industry adapted and introduced new-car-friendly aftermarket parts and there are still a slew of cars that are old enuf to take all the classic aftermarket items. Car audio will adapt and carry on in the same manner.

Dukk, the big growth is in Ceiling/Inwall/Distributed audio -- renovations are HUGE and if the wall is open, why not put CAT5E and speaker wire inside? I have been involved in Custom home since 1995, and it has grown big time. Sound Plus is shutting its doors and doing custom only... makes you think huh?

we appear to be alternating posts. Yes I can see total home integration being a growing field. I was focusing on high end home audio only.
