What happens if...

What happens if I buy a cd player with 8 volt preouts but my amplifier's input limit is around 5-6 volts? Would anything be ruined?

Generally the amp should be ok. The head unit won't be putting out the full 8 volts constantly.

most HU wont put out there rated power. my Alpine says its 4 volts but he sub preout clips at 2.7 volts.
