what happens

what happens if you bring an amp down to .5 of an ohm when its only supposed to handle 1ohm? Just wondering if its capable. Might be a stupid question, but I'm new to the stereo world

Less resistance equals more power out of the amp, but generates more heat... which will damage the amp if it wasn't designed to go down to 0.5 ohm.

it depends on the amp... people comonly confuse specs, and what the amp was designed to do...

if the amp's specs say it will do 1000 watts at 1 ohm, but the amp actually will do more at 0.5 ohm without any damage, then the amp was designed to preform at the lower resistance...

it's when you take an amp that was designed to put out 1000 watts at 1 ohm, and nothing lower, running it at 0.5 ohm will likely damage the amp fairly quickly...

regards, Mark

Lightbulb

^ and that is often one of the differences between a $200 1000watt amp and a $1000 1000watt amp. Push the one and it handles the abuse. Push the other one and you got yourself a $200 fog machine...

Running that far below rated load may score you less clean power because of current limiting in the power supply...
In alot of cases after you consider impedance rise and power compression; you may still be at a reasonable load and may net more average power before running into distortion... but most amps only have the capacity to put out %20-30 more current then they are rated for at nominal load, so thats about the most Id expect to get...

Damping factor will also be cut in 1/2 (most amps should still be OK) and you will probably also increase the overall amount of distortion the amp is putting out...

My advice would be to stick around the recommended load for your amp unless you have made some carefull considerations.....

Thanks guys, The amp is a JBL Power 1200.1 if that helps anything. I am going to run 2 of them to a DD 9515 with .5 ohm voice coils. Any worries or suggestions?
